Has anyone tried picky bars? Im just wondering what you think of them in regards to a paleo diet and if you liked them.

I took a look at the ingredients list for several kinds and I would not consider these paleo bars.

"Ingredients: organic dates, organic sunflower butter, raw honey, organic rice cereal (Organic brown rice, Organic brown rice syrup, Sea salt), rice protein (protein from whole grain sprouted brown rice, natural vanilla flavor), organic apricots, cranberries, organic pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, semi sweet chocolate chips (cane sugar, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, soy lecithin (soy), vanilla extract), cinnamon, kosher salt, canola & sunflower oil. "

"Ingredients: organic dates, organic almond butter, agave nectar, organic rice cereal (Organic brown rice, Organic brown rice syrup, Sea salt), rice protein (protein from whole grain sprouted brown rice, natural vanilla flavor), organic apricots, cranberries, organic almonds, organic pumpkin seeds, organic walnuts, pistachios, organic cashews, semi sweet chocolate chips (cane sugar, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, soy lecithin (soy), vanilla extract), cinnamon, kosher salt, canola & sunflower oil. "

Every one I checked out included rice cereal, rice protein, semi sweet chocolate chips (includes cane sugar and soy), canola & sunflower oils. I would go with Larabars if you're looking for something paleo friendly (even then you need to read the ingredients, not all of them are paleo). Here's the ingredients list for their "Apple Pie" ones:
Dates, Almonds, Unsweetened apples, Walnuts, Raisins, Cinnamon.

Gonna have to back up Amanda. The only "Paleo" bars I've ever seen are Lara Bars. On Facebook, I keep getting adds for Steve's Paleo Kits - haven't looked into them though.

(this is why I can no longer consider myself Paleo since I eat bars from Pro Bar, Organic Food, and Amazing Grass).

Paleo snacking would be macadamia nuts and jerky - fats and protein.

They also sell Tanka bars at Whole Foods which are buffalo meat and cranberries (which is essentially Native American pemmican - very paleo).

But yeah, going Paleo means not eating a lot of food that comes in a wrapper!

Thank you Fieldsy4life That darn wrapper thing!. lol Im actually doing pretty good, making my own food now. But Im addicted to Cliff Bars at the moment and trying to ween off. (Thats actually the only pre-packaged thing Ive been eating lately) Looking for something to replace it with, I did recently buy some macadamia nuts and will look into the Jerky and the Tanka bars. Thanks!

Totally recommend the jerky tip. You can make your own for a fraction of the cost you buy the paleo friendly stuff (the Steve's Kits that Fieldsy mentioned, for example, have always been a little too pricey for my budget) for and then the spices and flavours are all up to you! Pretty awesome.

I just looked up Tanka bars. I read their philosophy and read about the nutritional value of the bars themselves. Sounds awesome! They have a goal of getting 100% of their meat from grass fed buffalo, but state they are currently 75%. That's still great. I can't wait to try these. I am not big on eating from a wrapper, but sometimes you just need a quick snack that's easy to grab. I get so tired of nuts and other primal friendly things.

    Thanks!!!

Steve's Paloe Kits are good stuff. They also benefit a good non-prof.

I make my own "granola bars", use finely shredded coconut, almonds, honey, coconut oil, raisins and some other mixed nuts. They're pretty tasty but a little high in sugar. Been looking into making jerky as well. And I LOVE Larabars! They're usually my dessert :)

I am going to have to look for that one next time I am at whole foods...I didn't see it last time I was there - do you know where they usually have them - is it in with all the other bars...

As far as I know the pretty much straight forward Larabars (the ones without chocolate) are the only bars you can get fairly easily at grocery stores that would fall under the Paleo way.

I have made my own Lara balls....pretty straight forward - dates (buy the good moist kind - I buy Mejool dates in bulk from Whole Foods), nuts, unsweetened coconut flakes, a smidge of dried fruit, some coconut oil - blend it up in a food processor and scoop out roll into balls (I then sort fo roll them in coconut flakes so the outsides aren't super sticky.

I tend to shy away from the bar execpt every once in a while because it does pack quite a high carb/sugar punch

Thanks Twinmom... Im pretty sure I saw some recipes for larabar balls on some sites. I thought I had read someone where a while ago to stay away from larabars's, dont remember where I saw I thought. I can make some and freeze what I wont use right away. Plus I will have the option of making them the size I want I want them. For some reason I have issues with leaving a half open bar just sitting around, If I open the wrapper I feel the need to eat the whole thing...lol

Believe it or not, the Tanka Bars at my Whole Foods are in the BUTCHER section (which is also where they keep the jerky).

I've never tried them because it's like $2 for 70 calories. I know you're not *supposed* to eat Peanuts and Cashews if you're Paleo, but the Lara Peanut Cookie and Cashew Cookie bars are a great 200 cal snack. Will your intestines become inflamed from the lectins from the legumes? Probably not. Just drink a lot of water with them because they are only 1.7 ounces and take a little while to satiate you.

Same goes for Jerky - it's $7 for a 200 calorie bag. Paleo = expensive sometimes.

Organic Food Bar has a very small ingredient list. Some bars have brown rice protein and quinoa - which are considered grains. Will you get colon cancer or even worse, get fat if you eat them? No.

Sometimes you need to go with what will be most filling and most convenient when you don't have access to your fridge or stove.

So if you're not looking for protein and you're trying to stay low carb, 2 ounces of macadamias will be all you need to curb your appetite for a couple hours :)
