I've read a couple posts from low carbers that eat more calories then suggested and still lose weight.... Can this be true?

Absolutely. Although it's probably more true for those with more to lose, and for those at the earliest stages of following Atkins.

Just remember it's people who are in ketosis. They are eating very low carb - 20 to 30 grams a day - and all of it is low glycemic, from vegetables (not, say, one 30g slice of bread). Cutting out cupcakes and eating 2500 calories a day isn't going to work. Eating 100g of carbs a day plus 2100 calories is probably not going to do you any good. But if you're eating really healthy and clean and very low carb, you can do it.

You should pick up a copy of Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. He explains all the science behind low carb.

Yes I can loose weight on a 3000+ cal a day diet as long as my carbs are very low. Those that say low carb is by design a low calorie diet as well are kidding themselves and quite frankly just haters. Each gram of fat (which should be the primary fuel on a low carb diet, not protein) has 9 calories, while each gram of carbohydrates has 4 calories.

As suggested pick up Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution to start and read the science behind the idea of low carb. You'll see that there is MUCH more at play in diet than just calories in vs. calories out, and has MUCH more to do with hormones, inflammation, and addiction.
