I will have to look into Maca, I've seen a few others post that they are taking it to and it helped regulate their periods. Metformin is not helping with that so maybe taking Maca too will give me the extra help I need.

    Thanks for sharing your tips!

I have taken Metformin for the last 12 years. Recently I started Spironolactone which has helped with the water weight greatly. I also take two multivitamins and a complex B vitamin because I am a Vegetarian and the Metformin slows down the absorption of B12. I add cinnamon to what I can and have it daily usually in unsweetened applesauce.

I'm currently taking metformin 500 mg twice a day. Has anyone else tried the PCOS Insulite system? I tried it for a few days, it was pretty expensive too...but there were just so many pills to take, I kept forgetting, and the pills made me gag a lot. Just wondered if anyone else has experience with that.

  • I take 500 mg of Met twice daily, and Lo Estrin FE (skip the iron, I don't need it), plus a multivitamin. That's it, so far. I've had PCOS since puberty, at the least, but it took finding a doctor who knew/cared what PCOS was to get any help. I don't have starches, I have one or two servings of whole grain a day, and other than those, my carbs are all from veggies, nuts, or beans. Only been doing this for around two months, though.
I do still have stupid facial hair, and painful cycles, but with the lifestyle change, my acne is almost completely gone. Hair is still somewhat thin, but I'll give it more time.
  • I have been on Metformin 1,500 for 3 years. It has regulated my periods (I used to bleed non-stop and never go off of my period), and after the first few months, I have had no problems with it.

I was on Spiro for a few months, but I went off of it because I felt that it was unhealthy as a long term drug.

I used Vaniqa for awhile, but it is so expensive.

I have also been on Victoza for 1 year. Victoza is a blood sugar medication and you inject it into the fatty part of the stomach below the belly button. It has an appetite suppressant, and has helped me lose some weight.
  • Hello everyone I was diagnosed with PCOS yesterday after a miscarriage in May 2011, and a year of ttc. I was put on BC to regulate my hormones and cycles. I was also told to lose weight in the next 6-8 months (65lbs. my goal) and with the birth control I should be ready to ttc by Feb. hopefully.

I was on Metformin and did not see any change in my PCOS. The only thing that has helped is my hysterectomy because I only have one ovary now and it only gets bad one or two times a year. This past week was one of those times. I took the two Tramodol I had left from when I had sciatica and it seemed to help. By day three, all I needed was Pamprin. However, it has to be the blue box. The pink one doesn't seem to help. I also went to the chiropractor and he did some work on the nerves that go to the ovary. Not sure if that helped or not, but could have made it a shorter period of pain because it was only like two really bad days this time.

My doctor did put me on Depo Provera shots. I was finally pain free the whole time I was on it, but it almost ruined my marriage and put me in jail for child abuse. DO NOT EVER let your doctor talk you into taking them. Why? Search the web for Depo Provera Horror Stories. I'm one of them.

I am on birth control. It has made my boyish figure into a much more womanly figure (size 3 jeans to size 7. B cup to D cup) I want to get off of the BC because I heard that whether or not I have PCOS that it can hurt in the long term trying to have a baby.

However, I do know that before I was on BC I would have period cramps without the actual periods. My dr thinks that they are probably the cysts popping? I had kidney stones in January and they gave me an ultra sound and found cysts the size of quarters on my ovaries... I don't know if they have popped or not, because I haven't felt any pain outside of normal cycles that are sort of forced by the BC. So pain may have been dramatically reduced by the BC.

Im currently on Spiro for acne/facial hair... doing wonders for the acne done nothing for the hair ... sad :(!

Same here. No acne but still having hair issues!!!

I wish i would have found this DR sooner. No doctor was ever able to diagnose me. If one of my other doctors would have figured out I had PCOS for year, it may have saved me from terrible scarring on my face..

Diagnosed about 2 years ago after my period was coming every 7 or 8 months. I don't have very severe symptoms; very light acne, mild excess hair, hard to lose weight, cycle irregularity. My GYN put me on BC (Loestrin FE) just to regulate my cycle but I kept forgetting to take the pills. Now I'm on the NuvaRing and it's working wonderfully! Since starting on (any) BC I've noticed the hair doesn't seem to be an issue anymore.

For me, I've been on some form of hormones (birth control) for about 5 years, I did well on Ocella but that's pretty much off-the-market now, Zarah (gave me TERRIBLE acne), and now they are trying me on Sprintec (bad Pms, bad acne, emotional all the time to the dismay of my boyfriend, lol). I really want to switch back to something like ocella.
For hirsutism, I either use an epilator (heaven-sent!), or I (rarely) Nair my girlstache/sideburny things. Luckily, I'm rather fair haired so my facial hair is white. Not always blonde, mind you, but matte white and both the Blonde/white show up SO much in the sunlight. And I keep a good pair of tweezers on me at all times for those stray hairs which just appear on a daily basis. For my belly hair which is DARK while everything else is blonde, I just shave it when I do my legs. No one sees my belly anyways. I don't know how I feel about being on a medication for getting rid of the hair... I'm the sort of person who tries to cure things by eating properly, etc but we will see in the future!
And for weight loss, I started off at 5'3" 195lbs, but by cutting out gluten (all wheat, barley, and rye), I noticed my cramps/abdomen pain was better and my acne was reduced, and cutting gluten out of my diet was when my doctor suggested a protein-based diet for weight loss because of the pcos.. I'm doing the Dukan Diet (high protein, low fat, low carb) and I've gotten down to 158lbs.
    oy, I've written enough XD

---- Good luck with the Sprintec, I didn't like it either, I had horrible side effects on it, and the worst was the migraine headaches every other month....
  • I was diagnosed a little over a month ago with PCOS after more than a year of symptoms, I had been worried about my fertility etc for a while now, because my mother had quite a few issues with her pregnancies, and ended up needing a complete hystorectomy at 29 - I am currently 30 - and for the last year and a half while on BC would go off and on with NO period for months at a time, and then when I did have a period, it was litterally NOTHING. It was frustrating. I was put on progesterone for ten day, wait 14 days and then took another 10 days. It did nothing. Had ultrasounds done. Was told everything was clear. 5 months later nothing was fixed, had horrible pain with my next period. Pain I could compare to when I had gallstones, went to another Dr. I had seen before, she had the ultrasound results sent to her. And it litterally said CYSTS were all over my ovaries. I was very upset! She immediately sent me to an OB/GYN specialist and with just looking at the results she sent him, diagnoesed me with PCOS - I am currently taking Adipex-P to help with the weight loss - I started it 14 days ago - and have already lost 15lbs. It is a nice feeling - just waiting now to actually "see results" can't really tell anything yet!

After being on Metformin since 2005 and steady for the last 2 years with no effect, I asked to be put on Victoza(an injectable) on July 30th. I have in the 13 days since; lost 8lbs, started a period on the 8th(last one was in Jan) and gained so much energy.
I have had no side effects like I did on the Metformin, which never got better.
  • Hello ladies! When I was finally diagnosed back in 2007, I was taking Provera (and whatever that 'natural' one was...it made me feel high), Metformin, (HCTZ....water pill for High blood pressure, and Synthroid for hypothyroid). NONE OF THEM WORKED (Well, I felt like the Metformin was killing me, and my menstruation came on two years later seemingly spontaneously because I wasn't on medication).

After not being able to going to the doctor and giving up (for the past few years)...I have decided to take charge. I cannot afford the doctor and am trying natural remedies thus far:

PRAYER, Black Seeds/Oil (When I can get it) with honey, ACV with honey, Kelp capsules (more for thyroid and energy), exercise, making changes to my diet (slowly slowly, or else I binge and give up)...and this has been wonderful thus far.

I don't get blood work done, but my cycles have been more regular (even shortening, from an average of 40-something days to 30's, now moving towards every 30 days!). I intend to start charting again this cycle to track ovulation.

I have had PCOS for 11 years. I am currently on metformin (500mg 2x a day). It has been a little over a month, not showing any weightloss nor is it helping to prevent the cyst. But, I am going to try it for 6 months to see.

I was diagnosed in April of 2011 while TTC via IVF since nothing else had worked. I didn't treat my PCOS since I figured IVF would give me a baby and my irregular cycles and weight gain were irrelevent.

Neither of my 2 IVF cycles worked and now I'm back at the drawing board. I tried Jenny Craig and weight watchers. Neither did anything for me other than make me hungry and grumpy. I started low-carbing this week and and seeing my GYN next Wednesday to ask for metformin.

I am 5'6 and was 242.8 lbs on Tuesday today I'm 238.6 which is a good start. I'd like to get down to a healthy 155 lbs and hope metformin will help me do that.

I have been diagnosed with PCOS for about 6 years although I knew I had it for 3 years before that a close friend and a coworker had it and they explained the symptoms and I knew with my excessive facial hair and irregular periods that I more than likely had it. I was on birthcontrol since I was 15 to 23. When me and my boyfriend broke up I stopped taking it which is when all these craxy things begin to worsen. My periods were always monthly but it went to 3 day periods instead of 6, my hair on my face took over and was not just a mustache but a beard and sideburns as well. I gained weight especially in my midsection front and back, and the fatigue and lack of energy is unexplainable and last my mood swings worsened so bad I thought I was Bipolar. After my Gyno diagnosed me I was started back on Birth Control until I was ready to get pregnant and then he would send me to a fertility specialist. Well my Endocro took me off birth control after 6 months because my blood pressure was to high and she felt that it was counteractive (why keep me on BC to raise my BP to take a med just to bring it down) so I went years 2 more years on BP meds only until I was ready to get prego. Then the Ferti Doc put me on Metformin, and Clomid and with 4 tries it didnt work so then tried one IUI with failure so me and my fiance decided to wait a while and lose weight first which is when i got on Spiro to help with the hair while I was losing weight. It has been 2 years I still have not lost any weight I will lose about 15-20 pounds and get stuck and unable to lose anymore when i need to lose over a 100 pounds to help with a healthy lifestyle and pregnancy. I dont know what to do I joined MFP 6 months ago to lose 11 pounds in 2 months and hit a plateau. I do aerobic exercise, strength training, 6 meals a day and low carb diet and I still cant lose. My facial hair is still growing daily, I am still exhausted, my moods are unbearable, and I can lose weight. I dont think I will ever lose weight or have a baby.. I dont know what to do.

I take Spironoloctane 100 mg twice a day
Metformin HCL ER 500 mg a twice a day but he said I can take it 3 if I want although I DONT want to cause it messes with my stools
Propanolol ER 60mg once a day

    OTC
    Multivitamin
    Super B Complex
    Fish Oil
    Vitamin D3
    Vitamin C

I am currently on metformin. The extended release version has worked wonders for tummy side effects. I really didn't notice the benefits until I started eating right and working out while on it. Since then I am steadily losing weight, facial hair is pretty much gone, and I've had two periods in three months (wohoooo). I also added a womens multivitamin to the mix.

I started going gluten free as well and it helped me out immensely. I've never heard of the Dukan Diet though. I may research that one.
  • I was diagnosed with PCOS about 10 years ago. I've been on metformin, which didn't do too much for me and I was also put on low dose BC for a while, but since my mother's side has a history of strokes, they took me off of it.

I've yet to find anything that helps the facial/body hair issues for me (even tried laser hair removal when it first came out but it didn't really work for me at all). However, about a year ago I got into running and have since lost about 65lbs. I also started eating a majority of gluten-free foods and having a higher protein based diet. That seemed to help me the most as far as losing weight.
  • I am on metformin and i am on loestrin it's helped a bunch with my mood swings..and no acne or weight gain...but metformin dosage i am on is a bit high i am going to the doctor tomorrow for blood work and check my A1C hopefully is down that way i can reduce the dosage. i am starting to feel better finally. :)

I take Vitex, Dandelion Root and Burdock Root. I also eat a balanced vegetarian diet. I find that as long as I stay below a certain weight my cycle stays pretty regular.
