This is so sad a lady who was pregnant was murdered while on a morning run. Sad that she lost her life and now 3 small kids no longer have a mother & more disgusting that you cannot even go on a simple run these days without worrying about being killed.
Just sharing & please be careful when running alone.

Great Post. Unfortunately/fortunately pepper spray is illegal in the UK so I can't bring that, but I always run on a popular route (lots of people) and I do listen to music, but just in one ear so I can still hear what's going on a bit. I agree always god to bring phone (I use it for music as well as my run tracker so less things to carry). Never thought about the pony tail tip (about it being used to grab you!), don't know how to work around this this though. Maybe a bun or shave all my hair?
Thanks again for this. I hope lots of women read it!

At the odd hours or in spooky locations I always bring my dogs. They LOVE to run with me. And I've never had a problem with feeling spooked when they're with me. Even though they awfully friendly, I think a woman running with a dog is more of a hassle to those looking to cause trouble.

I don't even know if you are joking about the gun?!

That's so sad.... There was a murder here in Montana in a remote, sleepy town where a woman jogger was murdered. Hit the area hard since they have (had) such a low crime rate and definitely gave a wake-up call to all of us who run alone. I still do, but I try to be more aware of my surroundings, take more residential routes than trail running, etc.

    It's still sad....

I saw this and told hubby that I wanted to enroll in a martial art as soon as we have time/money for me to do so. I've considered a martial art in the past and I know learning how to defend myself properly would put my mind at ease. I wish I could run with my dog, but she's a basset hound and once I hit two miles she's done. If we ever get a second dog someday I'm going to get one that will be great for running.

Anyways, it is scary. I saw the article yesterday and I was very conscious of any slight perceived danger while running this morning. I know that I will feel better once I have some sort of way to defend myself.
  • I ran in a park right after reading this article. Talk about being paranoid. I'm definitely going to check into getting spray to take with me. For the park run, I only ran with 1 ear bud, and I held my car keys in my fist (poking outward). I know it's not much...but I might be able to bloody someone a bit if they came at me.

The martial arts idea is a good one, too. I have wanted to take self defense for a while now. A girlfriend of mine wants to get a ladies group together. I might have to form one, and soon!

I hear you on the paranoia. Yesterday morning on my run some harmless older man comes limping along the road that I'm running on with a boony hat in his hand - probably out for some morning exercise. I said "Hi" but kept a very watchful eye. All I kept thinking was "That limp could be an act and that hat could have some sort of toxic substance on it." Jeesh!

I ran on Sat morning and I was full on paranoid after reading this. I have to start at 530AM to make sure I get back in time to get breakfast ready and I run through the park as it is a really nice route.

Has anybody got any suggestions of what to carry apart from pepper spray? I don't have time to go to a martial arts class so that option is out. I definitely don't run with headphones anymore as I want to be more aware of the sounds around me.

    Thanks in advance!
