I don't know when I'm full, or hungry???

I am really surprised by the amount that I am able to eat. I started small amounts of shakes yesterday (8th day post-op VGS) and still felt hungry. Today I poured the whole thing in the glass; 12 ozs. I drank the whole thing! Granted, it took 30 - 40 minutes, but I didn't feel full.

Also, my signals for hunger seem to be all off too. I feel hungry alot! And I thought that I wouldn't feel hunger at all.

Anyone else have any other experiences with empty/full signals from the tummy? I'd love to hear if these work themselves out.

I'm 5 weeks post RNY and I could chug my 4oz shakes pretty easy starting a few days out but I've discovered anything liquid I drink passes through pretty quick so doesn't trigger the full response. solids are different depending on the density, meat for example makes me full aka causes pain if I eat much past 2 oz, soft mushy things I'm good at a 1/2 cup but can eat again if I want to in about a half hour. I have a couple of surgery buddies who both got the sleeve literally the week before I did the RNY and when I saw them at their four week check up they had similar concerns as you so it may just be that the sleeve being a longer stomach pouch handles being full different that the RNY. I also can't offer much help about hunger feelings either because I was repulsed by food for the first week and pretty much broke myself of hunger and cravings during the 2 week pre surgery liver shrinking diet. I usually eat about 4 times a day and each meal is packed with protein which seems to sustain me and keeps my energy up.

Liquids pretty much pass right through so they won't make you feel full or they didn't (and still don't) for me. As for the hungry, I don't remember actually feeling hunger for several months after surgery. Even now, when I do feel hungry it's not like before surgery. I don't know exactly how to explain it except that it's just different.

Keep a schedule of what you are supposed to eat and when and stick to it. Hopefully you will be able to read your body's signals as you get further out. I'm almost 4 years out (RNY) and still have to stick to a schedule or I get off balance. It does get better!!
