Doctor's Visit

At the Doctor's I also had to address something for my son, and between that and listing all the symptoms and spouting out information that I've learned to my Doctor, I totally blanked on asking her to refer to me to an endo. Sigh.

She didn't want to put me on Armour as she said that there is adrenal in there, and we're not sure of my levels, etc. BUt she did agree to put me on T3 - cytomel. I am going to start it today and hope there is some difference! She did agree that I am still experiencing quite a few symptoms, even though my TSH levels are normal, at last testing.

She tried to get me a reverse T3 test, but that lab doesn't do them anymore, so I was only able to get TSH, T3 and T4. I hope that's enough!

She also gave me a stupid diet that SHE had to do before going for a hernia operation to lose weight - it's basically ZERO carbs, and very bland. Ugh. No way, I prefer to find a better way of eating!

Anyway, cross your fingers for me that T3 works!!

Oh ya - and she said that the antidepressant that I am on (which I found out can inhibit my pill absorption) is known for putting on weight, anyway! SHEESH! She is going to change that, too - to something that doesn't cause weight gain.

This thyroid journey is tough! I'm also on an antidepressant (Zoloft) - I wonder if that is messing with my weight loss? Hmmmm.

Skeck, Yes probably. My friend is on Zoloft and her weight gain went crazy. I was on Paxil and gained and couldn't lose. Now I'm on Wellbutrin and finally one that doesn't cause weight gain. In fact I feel that it is helping me lose. (Not fighting the Paxil) Hopefully when I get this thyroid mess straightened out I will be able to stop the Wellbutrin.

Good luck to all of us with our Meds.

Happy you were able to have a good talk with your doc. I have found cytomel helps, but still feel sad at times, which is unusual for me. I take it in the A.M. and then again a small dose about noon to pick me up during the day. I am considering trying Armor, but also concerns about the variable dose with each batch. This will take a long time. Be patient.

Thanks everyone - I think my Doc prescribed me the Cytomel for 2x a day. We'll see how it goes! Just got a call from the Doc's office - well, message - and apparently, just my B12 was low. T3, T4 and TSH were fine, I guess! Sigh. I was kind of hoping for something to show up, like low T3. Maybe it's a good thing that it didn't?

Do you think since T3 was ok, that it will be ok to TAKE Cytomel?

and my Doc also said that Wellbutrin and Pristiq were the two that didn't cause weight gain...I am going to try Pristiq.

Define "fine"? Your T3 should be at the high side of normal and your T4 should be at the low side of normal. But if your adrenals are fatigued or your Ferritin/Iron levels are off, the T3 is not being properly utilized by your cells, so you are still hypothyroid.

If your levels were really fine, you wouldn't need anti-depressants - it's your thyroid causing the depression.

Doctors really kill me -- There is no adrenals in Armour. I've been taking Armour for 6 months and I have adrenal fatigue - my adrenals are barely functioning.

I know you don't have a lot of options for medical care but this doctor is no bueno.

    HI Terri,

I've actually dealt with depression since my teens. Although I am not discounting that it could be exacerbated by hypothyroidism.

They didn't say the levels (crappy) and when I called today they are already on a 2 week summer vacation (double crappy). So I will call back mid-July to see what the numbers are.

In the mean time, I am going to start taking the cytomel, and take D3, B12 (which I was low on), iron, a multi, Vitamin C, flax and fish oils.

:) Have to now get off my pity-me-nothing-is-happening eating jag and get back to healthy eating - good carbs (but low), no processed foods, no added sugar, higher protein, good fats.
