Running in 110 degree weather?!?!

I am just starting running. I am a bigger girl, just crossed into the 200s. Its getting up to 110-112 here in OK and I am terrified to run outside. Even closer to the evening it is still very hot. And I hate running inside, and I don't really have access to and inside track or gym. Any suggestions to running in the heat? Or should I just wait for it to cool off and then start again? I have been doing Workout DVDs on my rest days anyway and Ive just stepped those up since I haven't been running. Advice??

    I would not be able to run in those temps. If you can, I'd get up early in the morning before it gets that warm to go. I usually go at 5 am and tomorrow it's going to be mid 70's and humid for us. But, I'd rather run in that than the upper 90's that it's supposed to get to!

    Your best bet is to run early in the a.m. Temps should be reasonable, and you'll start the day off right. Even if you have to run in the evenings, it's better than being out in the midday sun. Whatever you do though, don't stop! You're just going to end up moving backwards if you do that. You said you don't like running indoors; I don't like running out here in the high desert, but sometimes you just have to suck it up and do what you have to do. :smile:

    It's supposed to get up to 101 today. There's even a heat advisory until 7pm. The hottest time of the day over here is usually between 2-6pm. I run in the morning around 745am, and it's usually about 80 by then. There's no way in hell you'd catch me running outside after that. It's just too hot and humid. In a week I'll be running at 6pm because that's when my training group meets, but I think we'll be running where it's somewhat shady. So either run in the morning, at night, or some place where you're not in the direct sunlight like in a shady residential area or park.

    Thanks Everyone. Morning for me doesn't work out =( So I guess, Ill just wait for it to cool off some. I have been doing good with my workout dvds, I Just miss running!

    When I lived where there were street lights, I waited until after dark when it cooled off to an acceptable level on hot days to go running. Some running tracks have enough light after dark to use them....

    I get up and run at 6 a.m..it is cooler than in the evenings (unless I wait until 9 p.m. but then I don't sleep). Today I ran at 7 a.m. and it was already hot.....that is how much of a difference 1 hour makes :(

    I've been running for awhile and honestly I would not run in that kind of heat, instead I would cross train for the day and do something such as swimming, kayaking, etc. Something cool

    I live in Houston, and ran in 106° heat last summer. It is best to go in the morning (if not possible evening then). Make you sure you are well hydrated before you go and bring water with you. Listen to your body!

    I'm starting C25K Monday and I'm from Dallas. The only time I work out now is in the mornings, and nothing past 9:00 AM. I get up at about 5:30 and go for a walk but I will be replacing that with C25k. If I was you, and mornings didn't work I wouldn't be running right now but instead maybe try to keep your endurance and muscles built up (the last thing you want is to have to start all over in the fall because we're cursed with southern heat). Maybe try biking on a stationary bike, or swimming, or something to that nature.

    Run early im in Arizona it's in 110s here too but at 630 am it's only 76-80
  • I'm really trying to figure out this running in the heat thing. For us, early mornings and late evenings are cooler but the humidity level is consistently greater than 70%. By mid-morning, the temperature goes up 10-20 degrees but the humidity goes down 10-20%. For outside running, I have been going to the track which is in the sun with no shade. I have used the treadmill for a few really hot days and/or when I had to deal with my kids AND do my workout at the same time. Since I live in the North, I don't think that we have too many shady areas since that equates to icy roads. The only one that I can think of off-hand is going up a mountain and I am no where near ready for that!!! I was thinking about trying a road run soon but am challenged to find a location that doesn't have crazy hills. But back on point.....which is worse.....high temperature or high humidity? My last week and a half has been rather discouraging and I really need to get in a good run to rebuild some confidence!

    I'm having a rough time, too.

    It's been hot (every day in the 90s), and HUMID...I think the humidity is worse for me than the heat (heat doesn't normally bother me). I can't seem to catch my breath no matter what I do. I've got a 5k on Wed and will most likely be walking it, so I can breathe.

    Hi, I am in Lawton too! The heat here is ridiculous. I use the indoor track at the YMCA. They have programs to help with membership costs, if that's an issue, and I love being able to use childwatch. I know you said it wasn't an option for you, but just in case you weren't aware of that info!

    I tried running in 92 degree (pretty dry) heat a couple of weeks ago. I stopped at 3 miles even... My body could not take it anymore. I came VERY, VERY close to passing out. Never again. It's just not worth it.

    If you can, as other people have said, get up early in the morning... But I would never advise someone to run in 110 degrees. I have friends in the desert of the United Arab Emirates who run half marathons at midnight because it's impossible during the day :)

    Personally, I can't take the heat, but thankfully am able to get up and run early in the morning. Planning to have my butt out the door by 6am tomorrow!
