Do you think it is really necessary to workout 6x a week, 1 hour per day aerobically?

Necessary? I don't know. I haven't read the book, so I can't really speak to the arguments it might make for this.

I'm doing this much (and then some) NOW, because it's an integral part of my weight loss regimen. Once I get to my goal, my expectation is that I won't need to work out as much to maintain my weight.

The author's recommend this because of the daily cycles our bodies go through. Especially at ages 40+ our bodies are in a constant state of decay. But 1 hour of aerobic exercise per day is a way to almost stop that decay and that you can live well into your 80's feeling like you are 50 if you do this and the other things he recommends. The authors back this up with a lot of good science from what I read in the book. It really takes a mindset change though to think you will do this the rest of your life. Now, as you guys say I am turning up the exercise to lose weight. But doing it for the rest of my life.... that is a huge commitment. The authors address that too. One of the main points they make is that you need to find an aerobic exercise that you LOVE.

For me honestly, that is biking. I used to enter road race even in my early 20's. But now my weight is such that physically my stomach is in the way when biking. I need to lose quite a bit more, like get down to 240 before I can comfortably hop back on that bike. I am looking forward to that day very much.

I've found that biking is my favorite aerobic exercise as well. It's outside, the scenery is constantly changing and it's something that my oldest daughter and I can do together that gives us quality time together. It's fun to see if we can go a little bit faster, farther, and longer each time we go out. We're not yet ready for a century ride, but our goal is to do one together by the end of 2013.

Hello everyone! I'm living the "Younger Next Year" lifestyle, having just finished the book a few weeks ago. Glad to find a group here with this in common. Gives us a common vocabulary to use.

Working out six days a week (on/off between fitness level one day and fat burn the next day) has actually allowed me to walk again. I have a bad knee and was in pain all of the time and limping, even with going to physical therapy regularly. After the first week of six day vigorous workouts, I notice significantly less pain. By week 2 , pain is nearly gone and I had an MRI of my knees done. I'm on week 3 now and it will be interesting to see what the orthopedic specialist tells me on Friday.

It's only an hour a day (90 min if you count cleaning up after). And, if you remember the biological imperative that Dr. Henry Lodge told us about, it makes sense. Our bodies don't understand our minds and language one bit. Our bodies only understand movement or not, fueling (eating) or not. That's it. If we aren't moving (hunting or gathering, one or the other) every day, our bodies will think we are in or getting ready to go into another Ice Age or faminie.

Besides, I can get right back on track with one day off exercise but it I have more than that. . .I'm too tempted to fall off the wagon!!!!

Look forward to chatting with and meeting you all!!
