Can you really burn fat at a deficit?

Just a quick question for my knowledgable friends at EM2WL... ;) We talk a lot about building muscle in order to maximize our fat-burning potential. However, if I'm trying to lose weight and I'm eating my cut (aka...eating at a deficit), can I really build muscle? Does fat actually burn off at a deficit? I guess I'm wondering if one can truly maintain muscle mass while eating at a deficit. I'd love a little clarification on all this. :) Thanks!

Well, fat only burns off when eating at a deficit. You cannot eat more than you burn and not gain fat. You can gain more muscle than fat, but you still add fat. It is highly debated on whether you actually gain muscle. I do not believe you can find anything concrete to prove it one way or another. I believe it is commonly believe you can add muscle if you are obese while on a deficit. Beyond that, you'll get vastly different answers depending on who you ask.
