Im for Belize and we eat lot of rice and beans but for the last 5 years i substitute the white rice with brown rice to make rice and beans you cook it the same way you cook it with the white rice but you have to let it cook a little longer and remember you have to know how to cook it right or it will not taste good.

I didn't use any seasoning. Just olive oil and a bit of salt. I was trying to cook it like plain white rice

This might sound weird but the trick to nice brown rice is to cook it like pasta (in lots of water), season it really well and let it boil for about 35 mins. DONT let the water cook out. At the end of the 35 minutes, turn off the stove, drain off the water and put the rice back in the pot (cover it) and put the pot back on the hot stove (turned off) for about ten minutes (the heat will absorb the remaining water). you can then use this rice to make fried brown rice or you can do red beans and rice by adding the (canned) beans in halfway through.
