i have never weight lifted before. there are a few things i have learned since 6/29/12.
#1-- weight lifting is challenging, invigorating, empowering and produces 'feelable' results.
#2-- i failed at my first attempts. i can do cardio to watching DVDs and letting my mind wander while doing intervals, but weightlifting is an entirely animal.
#3-- i need to plan when i do my weight lifting, just like i plan when i do my cardio.
#4-- i discovered today that when doing weight lifting i need to listen to heart pumping music, focus on my form and move, do reps until it hurts, do reps slowly and without momentum.
#5-- that even though i failed my first few attempts, i am not a quitter and am learning from my mistakes which i personally think is the reason behind this (current) lesson.
#6-- i worked out today with my headphones, heart pumping music (yes i am ashamed but happy to admit that george michael's you gotta have faith is great to lift too), focus, concentration, no momentum, and despite my previous trial sessions since 6/29 i have changed .5 inches on both of my arms, and can honestly "see" some minor yet visible results.
#7-- i look forward to my next weight lifting sessions.

I agree!!! Music for me is vital, without the right music, I just don't have that oomph when I am lifting.
And #4 is so vital. So many people use momentum as a cheat so they can do heavier weights. In the end, they are only slowing themselves down and hurting their progress.
And you did not fail, you made learning mistakes. There is a gulf of difference between a failure and a mistake. A mistake is something you do, learn from it and do better the next time. To fail is to make a mistake and then give up and stop trying to improve. As long as you learn from it, a learning mistake is NOT a failure!!!!0 -
thanks so much for your input!
i like the idea of a learning mistake, kinda what life is about huh...
thanks again for your advice too!!

Congrats on your first time pumping iron. I agree that #4 is very important. I've seen too many "experienced" lifters swinging away like monkeys. Not only is it bad form, but it's hard on your joints too. High reps, low weights build endurance but low reps (under 10) with the heaviest weight you can manage, builds strength.0
