Calf Pain?

I started C25K way back in October and managed to get to the 20 minute run before I started having pretty intense calf soreness that would not go away no matter how much I stretched, iced, heated, compressed, elevated, ibuprofenated, and everything else I could think of. I thought it was a strain so I decided to take some time off from running so that I wouldn't do something really awful even though I was just starting out. Needless to say life got in the way and it was March before I started back up again. I made it through two runs before the soreness/tightness was back. Each time I've taken a few weeks off, tried again, and it keeps coming back. Do I just have tight calves? Is my form bad?

Before you say anything, yes I've been fitted for proper running shoes by a professional and yes, I do take the recommended rest days - usually two as opposed to one because I feel like I perform better.

Anyone else experience this? I'd really like to continue running because I enjoy it, but I don't want to be injured. I've gotten some compression sleeves that my running store recommended and I haven't tried them during running yet but I don't feel like they've made a difference during recovery.

Help!

Well, the real answer to your question is to check in with your doctor about it to get information from someone who knows what they're talking about. Us fellow C25K noobs & graduates shouldn't be counted on for advice on health issues.

That said, I'll proceed to give some of the anecdotal-type suggestions I've heard...so take this with a big grain of salt (ya know, to provide electrolytes and all...). It might help to do a little longer warmup walk when you get started, and after that do some easy, slow stretching before you actually get into the C25K activity for the day. And be sure that you're doing thorough, slow stretching AFTER your workout, too. (though it sounds like you may already be doing this)

One last thing, be sure you're drinking plenty of water every day -- all throughout the day. I've heard that cramps and tightness can be related to insufficient hydration.

But again, note the "I've heard that"... Ahem. Check with your doctor. I'm sure it's something you'll be able to get on top of, and you'll be on to your 30 minute run with no problems! Good luck!
