We're going to eat this for my sister in law's bday! I just went through the menu and what a pain Mexican (which used to be my favorite) food is... But I think I figured out I am going to get this massive plate of meat and just give away my beans, rice, tortillas, etc. I am going to focus on avocado and maybe some full-fat sour cream :)

Any mexican food experiences?

Pardon me while I bask in the glory of all that is food porn, but...

Chile Rellenos....(chee-lay Ree-AY-nos) just roasted poblano peppers, filled with cheese, lightly pan-cooked with a coating of eggs, a homade tomatillo
sauce on top, more melted cheese, some homemade pico de gallo on the side as a garnish....

My El Yucateco Green and Red Habanero sauce all over the damn things.....

    Goooooooooooooooooooooooood food porn

I would assume the egg batter has some flour in it? Hmm.... that sounds good tho...

On the chili rellenos: most places do not put flour in the batter, but some might. You can always ask and have them omit the flour if they include it. I always get fajitas with guacamole and sour cream, or carnitas or carne asada, and ask to have the beans and rice subbed with veggies, a side salad or a chili relleno. Mexican food can easily be low carb with minor alterations

No... never assume because the real rellenos shouldnt have flour in the egg... if there is flour, send them suckers back!!!!!!!!!!!! Ive got a wonderful friend who owns/runs/works an authentic Mexican restaurant on the other side of Manchester, NH... and he says "to add flour would make the dish heavy, the peppers would not hold up well because of they are still quite watery even after roasting - I serve the best, not the mushy!".... in his gorgeous accent and big smile!!!! LOL!!!! Food porn and eye candy all in one sitting! BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA

    EXACTLY!

Their egg batter is egg-whites and seasonings to help bind to the roasted poblano at the place I go to my fix

OHHHH I forgot to mention... Pollo Poblanos are really good too!!!! Chicken and cheese stuffed in a roasted poblano pepper and treated just like a relleno... both ranchera and tomatillo sauce, more cheese on top.... and then I get pico de gallo on top of that... bathe them in my habanero sauces.....

It's so good and easy to eat those Fajita's. I always make sure I have the lettuce, sour cream and cheese on the side...little avocado is good too! If I order out I just ask them to hold the beans rice and tortilla's that way I don't feel tempted.
Authentic Chili Rellenos aren't made with flour, My sister in law makes them so, I don't order them anywhere else, unless I'm in Mexico. That the was the first place I ever ate them and it was the best...

I go with the fajitas and skip the tortillas, or a taco/fajita salad and again skip tortilla bowl.

I try to eat mexican about once a week - I ask them to not leave chips on teh table and I ask them to keep the beans, rice and tortillas. I make a litle mound of meat and peppers - light on the onions, and smother with a couple of tablespoons of sour cream, a couple of tablespoons of guacamole and a little shredded cheese. YUmmmm :)

I agree with fajitas sans tortilla. Extra guac.

I never think to ask for substitutions! Thank you!

So here is what I am wondering... Maybe I can ask for fajitas and tell them to hold the onions and instead give me more of the peppers and meat. And then tell them in place of the tortillas and the beans and rice, if they could just give me the guac, sour cream, and more veggies? Hmmm so many possibilities!!

Thank you guys... seriously you all make low carb so much easier because you come up with stuff I would not have thought of!!

This place is full of great info! Just this last week I went to chilis and decided to hv steak rather than my normal fajita. Bad idea, the plate came w only the steak, no broccoli for me yuk ;( so I subed w a salad. It was on another plate :( add shrimp, it was on even another plate. It was so miserable looking as I compared mine to my hubby's fajita plate. It had everything I eat wo the tortillas...back to fajitas for me :D presentation is sooooo important to me :)

You can always bring your own low carb tortillas. Tell the server you have a food allergy!
