So I've been lifting for less than a month now, just trying to get good form, and half-testing max lifts in the meantime.
Yesterday, I start out on the squats, warming up with light weights, keeping watch on my form. Don't know if it was the lunch I had, or what, but it felt like everything was falling into place - nice deep squats, no shaking, no straining.
So I started adding plates - 3 plates, then 4 - my previous max was 455 and it was a little stiff when I tried that before. I went down and up 3 times real smooth with 4 plates, so I went for the 5th plate. Another lifter (who's aiming for the Arnold Classic) came by and said "maybe you ought to put more weight on there" - he knows I'm a newbie, so he was just joking. I asked for a spot, and gritted my teeth and went to it.
Slow down, and nice and smooth back up! 495 lbs - new record. Then my spotter mentioned that my stance was way too narrow and I should be able to do a lot more if I just widen my feet (I was slightly narrower than shoulder width). He actually suggested that I try training to do strongman competitions. It made me feel REAL good to imagine that I could actually be a strongman competitor - highland games is one thing, but strongman has always given me a little bit of a scare.
Just wanted to get that out there

Wow! Nice job! It's so great when things go better than expected. Especially when others notice. Keep up the great work!0

Awesome brotha, always good to hear new numbers and accomplishments. Keep hittin the heavy weight!0

Congratulations on the PR. Stongman is a ton of fun so give it a shot if you can get your hands on the implements. The brute strength for things like stone loads seems to have a strong carry over to most things.0

Jesus, you'll reach that 500lb holy grail.... Well, probably next time you enter a gym. Awesome work!0

Training a month and already squatting in the 400's? Thats impressive man.

Once I get back to the gym (currently on a break due to work screwing with my schedule), I'll see about getting a video with the magic 500.
I feel I should add that even though I'm just starting on powerlifting, I've got 6 years of highland games and about 360 lbs of mass to throw behind these lifts. It's just so different going from throwing cabers to lifting iron.0 -
Wouldn't mind going to watch one of these as long as there is giant containers of beer and giant turkey legs to eat.0

Depending on the game location, there's always beer and meat (maybe no turkey legs, but a Scottish meat pie is just as good).
And I busted the 500 mark today! 525 for two reps! Add that to the 405 deadlift and 225 bench (I really need to retest that now) and I've got a 1155 total!
Now let's aim for 1200!0 -
Remember how I said I was aiming for 1200?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wz8AnabNG6o - 50 lb boost on the deadlift and I'm now in the 1200's!
I'm just so stoked about all this!0 -
Congrats brotha, keep up the hard work. Still wanna see the Highland games live though. I'm still wanting to compete but want to get close to where I use to be. My numbers right now are:
As of today - Age 46: 239 lb. body weight
Bench-375 lbs. 1RM 07/22/12
Incline Bench-340 lbs. 1RM 07/18/12
Incline Burn out set- 225x20 reps 07/22/12 end of routine
Squat-410 lbs. 1RM
Dead Lift- 425 lbs. 1RM0 -
If you're in the USA, then I can tell where the nearest one is, when it will be, and if you want to try out, who to talk to.
If you're pulling those sort of numbers, then you need to be trying out now, not waiting for bigger numbers. It's speed and power combined that'll get you the big throws, and you already qualify for the master's division (45 and over) so you don't have to fight the big 56 lb monster.0
