My first Half will be on Sept 29th

I started running using C25k in Dec/Jan, and really got the running bug! Yesterday, I turned 42 and decided to run my longest run so far - it was 8.5 miles - took me 1:36. I was actually pretty happy with my pace. My previous longest run was 7 miles at a 12 min pace, and this one was a 11:30 pace. I was so inspired that I registered for a half marathon at the end of September.

I run 3 times a week. I am up to 5 miles for my Tues and Thurs runs, and then a longer run on Saturday.

I think I generally have a pretty decent mid-foot gait, but I focused on running like I was barefoot this time, and my gait got even smoother and I felt like I could run much longer! When you are barefoot, you really do put your feet down very lightly midfoot and roll them forward. Try it if you haven't!!

By the end of the 8.5 miles, my legs were definitely getting tired, but I could have run farther.

Good job. Good luck with your 1/2. Sounds like you have a good base, but you can try one of the training plans on runnersworld.com. The plans build in some speed work and tempo runs as well. It doesn't cost anything...you'll get spammed from them, though.

You will do great for your first half!

If you are already running over 8 miles, then training for the half should be a breeze.

Thanks everyone! I did do some speedwork this morning - 5 min warmup jog, 1/2 mile fast, 1/4 mile slower, and repeat 3 more times - for about 4 miles. I ended up with a slower overall time!! That was mostly because it was already in the 70s and over 80% humidity, I think.

I am planning my first half for Sept 16. I have been following a plan from runners world's smartcoach application and will be going up to 8 miles this coming week. I have been working on my form too and it has made all the difference! I thought I would need motion control shoes forever.

    Good luck!
