OK People, so here's the challenge. We Jewish dieters have a fast day that starts at sundown on Saturday, and continues until evening on Sunday. That's the easy part. The issue is, we need to come up with healthy, filling, low GI food on Saturday afternoon that doesn't involve active cooking and food preparation on Saturday. So what's it going to be people??

Medjadara! Rice and lentils with blackened onions. :) It's usually eaten as a salad, so it will be fine if it isn't hot.

Fishes, such as herring and lox, are also good except that I don't like them.

How about preparing grilled chicken breasts on Friday and then making a salad with them on Sat afternoon along with veggies and quinoa, barley or brown rice and some nuts?

Alternatively roasted fennel/beets/sweet potatoes (which I think are low GI but not positive?) are nice cold, especially dressed with balsamic vinaigrette.

You can make chicken and rice in the crockpot. Another idea is to make sushi :) I'll probably be sticking with the former.

Thanks for that.. So erev fast is done, what do we plan now for when the fast is over?
I'm thinking maybe a fresh split pea soup and breadmaker bread...
I also make a fillo pastry cherry slice which I am thinking about making for tonight....
Any new ideas would be welcome

Chicken shishlik (not on skewers, but cut into nice chunks and grilled) and medjadara. Nummy!
