If he doesn't give you butterflies.
If he doesn't act nice toward his mom and dad

    This...definitely.

...if you can go days without any contact and not have the need to talk to him.
    ...if he is perpetually late.

Well really I wear a bright red lip stain not a lip stick. It doesn't smudge.

    OhMyGoodness! Yes!!

I am quite religious, and I actually LIVE what I teach in Sunday school, so when I first started dating I wanted to stick to mainly preachers/sunday school teachers etc... well they were all trying to get down my pants on the 2nd date, and have the gall to go to sunday school telling the women to stop being so loose. Really? It's stuff like this that makes me cling firmly to my home church- so many other churches are overflowing with such hypocrites!!

    She's religious.

Or, rather, she is *rabidly* religious. I suppose some pro forma religion can be tolerated as a quirky personality trait or hobby, like playing the banjo, or having cats.

Yea, I wasn't saved at the time so charge it to my head (how does a preacher, a youth pastor at that, date someone that isn't equally yoked?). Anyway, makes me appreciate my current church home SO much more!

It’s funny, I get that criticism a lot too. Honestly, I’ve found that “non churched” guys have been way more respectful of my religious practices (fasting, praying, attending services, no sex before marriage, dressing up rather than in jeans for church) than church-men. In fact, some of the best advice about fasting I got was from a man who hasn’t been to church (except for weddings) in years. I really appreciated that instead of bashing me for it, he said, “Well, I don’t agree but if you’re gonna do it here’s some research.” Very cool.

The catch is: as important as serving the Lord is to me, any man who desires to be a permanent part of my life will just have to accept it. And eventually be part of it. Not saying he has to get behind the pulpit, but he at least needs to be able to support my Sunday school teaching. But since I’m not in a rush to make anything “permanent,” I am more tolerant of the various types of men that come my way.

I was kinda going for "universal" type stuff with this thread. Stuff that we would mostly agree were red flags we wish we would have paid attention to early on. Sports teams, politics, religion, that kind of stuff is all kinda personal, and personality dependent… not really the goal of the thread (though fun to read).

Well, religion is definitely something that one should pay attention to early on in a relationship. It might be important because you are religious, and you want to find someone who shares your beliefs. It might be because you find organized religion irrational, and have a hard time understanding how an adult can still take it seriously.

But in any case, it does matter to people, sometimes significantly, and hence seems like a legitimate "red flag" in any relationship, no mater what your persuasion....

Sure it is, but I think it's kinda rude the way you wrote it after my post about being religious. I've got my thick skin on today and am used to the people on this board not agreeing with my faith or lifestyle. I'd just like to keep this thread civil so that all feel welcome to participate.

Perhaps if you’d written something like “… if their religious and moral beliefs are 180 degrees from yours” I might not have felt so compelled to make the comment.

Well, I disagree with my post being rude. You asked, so I replied.

I don't like censorship. So long as we're all being reasonable, and not attacking anyone personally, I don't see the problem.

Although I grant you I did compare religion to owning cats, which is quite the low blow... ;-)

If he says ' ...wants someone to smoke a blunt with and chill.'

Edit: Also no bigots. In the past I might have been willing to try to talk one into being saner and more open minded, but now that I'm a misanthrope, I'd have to try to teach him to hate everyone equally, and I'm not sure society needs more misanthropes!

I'd be guilty of this one if a man wore a weave or chopped his hair. Some of us have terrible facial recognition skills. I've had family members walk up to me and it took me a few seconds to register in my brain who they were.

Actually I'd say it is. One guy I dated wouldn't give up his cat for me. Since I'm allergic, I'm supposed to STAY drugged up if we ever got married or whatever. Shoulda added that to my laundry list! Forgot about that one!!
