Inches lost (yay), loss on the scale (not so much)

So I posted this in the main MFP forums section, but was just curious if anyone else had the same "issue".

Im ending on week 4 coming up shortly and I realized the scale has not moved. At all. Not even a pound.

Ive read elsewhere this is a common thing for Insanity and that month two the "magic" happens. Anyone else whos done the first month notice it wasnt spectacular concerning the scale?

Dont get me wrong, Ive lost loads of inches and am REALLY happy thus far. Just curious!

  • Yes. Without a doubt. It even happened that way my second time through. But the second month... ah, the second month. I'll just let you experience the "magic" for yourself. Spoiler alert: you will lose pounds, you'll probably even lose more inches, but "magic" won't be the word you use to describe the longer workouts while you're doing them. The magic doesn't come until you step on a scale after the fact. Stick with it!

Hahaha fair enough I will heed your warning xD

Ok I was curious about this too because everyone says the exact same verbatim about Insanity, and of course I need to hear it 6000 times before I believe it.

I will take your word for it :)
  • I'm the same way. People can tell me things, but I have to learn for myself. Once you do the first disc in Month 2, you'll realize you're taking a step up in terms of calorie burn. Any Insanity exercise with "Max" tacked to the front of it is serious business, but you'll be just fine.

I think maintaining or gaining is pretty common with people doing Insanity, from what I've heard anyway. I try, sometimes not very well, to not worry about what the scale says. I started doing month 1, then had to stop halfway through month 2, and then started month 1 again. In that time, I have GAINED 4 lbs. BUT lost 9 inches overall and my arms have never looked better. Sure it's a bummer when your weight doesn't go down, but try not to focus on what the scale says. It lies!

I hear you! I am on Week 2 and I actually gained weight but I lost inches around my waist and hips. I heard that you lose the weight during Month 2. My friend said that is when the weight melted away. So I'm hoping to experience the same thing. =)
  • We put way too much stock in what the scale says. I'm guilty, too. It's just one measure of health, and it can be a misleading one at that. I try to focus on whether I feel healthier today than I did a week or a month ago. How much further can I go into one of these DVDs without taking a break? How much stronger and more alert do I feel? The scale can't tell you everything, so don't let it make or break your fitness journey. Wake up, eat good food in proper portions, exercise hard, sleep, repeat. It's not easy, but it really is that simple.

Inches is where it counts... Dont forget muscle weighs more than fat!
  • A pound of muscle weighs the same as a pound of fat, but it takes up less space on your body. You are probably losing fat and gaining muscle at an equal rate, which is great!

I gained two pounds during my first week. Today starts week two for me and I lost the weight I just gained. I haven't been measuring my body, but I already feel more fit.

I'll stick with it if you do! : p

Same here - not a pound lost. BUT I lost 3 inches from both my hips and my waist by week 3, month 1. I don't weigh myself regularly anyway as it doesn't bother me but I weighed myself a few days ago and I've lost 3lbs and I am now in week 2 month 2. Plus my arms and legs look amazing, if I do say so myself :)

OK...so this is Day #4 of my Insanity Workout-Recovery Week, and I feel like the 260 calories that it burns daily isn't enough. I NEVER thought I would feel like this about exercise lol. I waited until I was one month short of my 48th birthday, before I decided to get serious about my health/wealth. This past Febuary, I completely changed my eating habits and started hour long Zumba classes 3-4 times per week. Two weeks in, I added Curves three times per week. Then I added a 4 mile walk and an 8 mile walk to each week. I've NEVER liked or been a water drinker...I can honestly say that I could easily claim drinking a glass or two...per year. Yes, I said, "year". Now I drink 8 to 10 bottles per day. By May, I had lost 35 pounds, tons of inches and clearer, tighter skin. In June, my oldest son decided to start the Insanity Workout, and since I had always wanted to try it, I decided to start it with him. Not that I was bored or anything with my current workout regime...I just wanted to see the "true" results" of Insanity. Therefore, I stopped all other workouts and am currently just doing Insanity. Last Saturday was the last workout in Phase One of Insanity. Now that I'm half-way in the Recovery Week...and the fact that I've only lost 4.5 lbs so far...I feel this NEED to add more workouts to my day. My body had gotten used to burning 800 to 1,800 calories per day...so this measily 260 calories just ain't cuttin' it!!! lol. One day I even burned 2,361 calories (did Zumba twice). Has anyone started Insanity Phase Two yet? Should I expect to finally lose a lot of weight that reflects the intensity of Insanity, or should I expect more of the same? HHELPPPPPPPP!!!!
