I accidently posted this in the regular forum. I was wondering why people were talking about the pop tarts they ate, etc. I also noticed a very different and condenscending attitude... I was like "Man, the Primal support group has really changed". That's when I realized it was on the regular forum.....

So let me try it again here and hopefully I can get some more objective answers:

Do any of you consider some of the evil foods to be over varying degrees of evil?

For example, I think wheat and corn are absolutely terrible and I make every attempt to keep them out of my diet. But, I feel like white potatoes and possibly even rice may not be as bad as wheat or corn and if I slip up and have a small portion every once in a while, I'm okay with it.

What do you guys think about the different "bad" foods..... namely corn, wheat, beans, rice, and white potatoes? I realize they are not Paleo, and I try with all my might to avoid them, but are there varying degrees of evilness?

I know at least on Primal, you can have white potatoes and rice on an infrequent basis. I had rice last night (Chipotle, yum!) and still came in under my desired carb count, so no harm done. However, I certainly wouldn't eat it on a regular basis.

but for me, i say that a potato every now and again is ok. rice, i LOVE rice so i will stay away from it. but for my family, kids and stuff, yes i still give them potatoes.. wheat is the biggest no no for me.

I think newbies are better off to leave those foods alone, I am afraid to get cravings for more, and perhaps a seasoned paleo/primal can handle it better once in a while........after all, we are human and we have our pitfalls, correct me if I'm wrong. I have been reading a lot of blogs on paleo.

Although I probably eat and exercise about 90+% Primal, I do so because it agrees with my body, it is sustainable and I see the results that I have not seen with any other way of eating (a lot of trial and error over 45+years of being a fatty). I don’t get hung up on good vs evil food, but have found, through trial and error, that the “good” foods agree with me and ”bad” foods don’t. In the short term, I go by my blood sugar readings (Type 2 Diabetic) and how I feel, and in the long term, my lipids and A1C. I find that grains, starches and too much fruit tend to spike my blood sugar, make me feel sluggish and these old joints seem to ache more, so I very seldom eat them, but I don’t feel guilty if I have a helping. I just keep in mind how I feel and my blood sugar. I have done a lot of research since I’ve learned about Paleo/Primal and I think I understand the science behind it and why my body is reacting positively, and I like it!

I am trying not to be extreme to aviod with those kind of foods. Once while on is okay. You'll need to eat those sometime to be prepared if you will have to eat them in some situations.

I occasionally will eat white potatoes but no rice, as it really has no taste for me. Perhaps I'll try rice again when I've lost some more. When I do eat potatoes, I only eat about 1/4-1/2 cup max because sweet and white potatoes give me gas, but they don't affect my loss in any way.

I must avoid all the non-Paleo type of foods, because I am now very sensitive to them and get bloating, stomach cramping, bubbleguts, and a very real autoimmune response causing sore joints for days. Very occasionally, I'll eat a bite or two of beans. I've found out that cheese also greatly affects my loss, but I really do love the taste of it.

Personally, assuming well-tolerated for the individual, I have no problems with white potatoes and white rice. Neither of which are exactly nutritional powerhouses, but I don't hear of many negative consequences of them. I'll very rarely have some hard cheese (parmesan (the *real* stuff), asiago, etc.) and haven't noticed any problems. I also very occasionally include kefir in a fruit smoothy and that seems well-tolerated too. (Not to be confused with the ONE time I had a bowl of homemade ice cream about a month ago that blew me up like a balloon...ugh.)

(And for the really curious, my diet is wide open...)
