Getting ready to start!

I've decided to start a primal/paleo routine. I've been on mfp for a few months, and I've kicked up my strength and cardio - but I don't seem to be making any noticable progress. I've been researching primal/paleo and I think I'm ready to give it a shot. I'd appreciate any words of wisdom for someone like me who is trying it for the first time (I plan on starting on Sunday) Thanks!

I would recommend a lot of reading! Finding recipes and foods that are easy to make and without crazy ingredients:) www.marksdailyapple.com has a section where he lists a bunch of paleo blogs, that's where I started. Good luck!

Hi. Feel free to add me as a friend and view my diary. I'm 3 weeks into the diet/lifestyle, and doing Primal. I'm not an expert and am still learning, but I feel pretty good about it now.

I ditto reading the blogs. Mark's Daily Apple is great, and I subscribed to his newsletter, e-book, etc.

I also read nomnompaleo.com for meal inspiration and just to get an idea of what a consistent, everyday paleo diet is like. Plus the blog rocks.

There are other posts in this group for newcomers with other suggested reads.

I just want to say be prepared for the carb flu.... don't let it discourage you. Stick it out. You are going to see results and you will feel so great. you'll be happy you tried it.

    1. Expect a carb flu. Be prepared for it and don't give in to your cravings.
    2. Set your macronutrients to match the Paleo/Primal way (mine are 60/25/15 f/p/c) but standard is something like 60/20/20.
    3. Buy snacks because you'll need them for those desperate times in between meals when first starting out (beef jerky, fruit, cheese if you're doing dairy).
    4. Most importantly, don't discuss your food choices with anyone initially, except maybe MFP Paleo/Primal members and your immediate family. It's controversial and many people don't believe in it because they've never tried it. Thus you will get questions, concerns, "that's not healthy", "what about your cholesterol", yada, yada, yada...
    5. Drink lots of water
    7. Read your little heart out. Fill your brain with all that is the Paleo/Primal way, and the reasons behind the diet.

I'm nearly a year into paleo/primal eating, and I second all of the advice!

I'd also suggest planning your meals, all 3 if you have to. The easiest way for me to stray is when I don't know what to eat or don't have anything easy on hand. Planning for leftovers - doubling up when you cook protein or chopping extra vegetables - doesn't add too much tot your kitchen time but can be a lifesaver. Pre-cooked protein can be wrapped in lettuce for a quick "sandwich", heated with veggies and coconut a minos for stir fry or thrown on top of a salad.

And remember, it's usually a huge difference from the way most people eat. It's a big adjustment, but it's worth it!

Probably one of the best pieces of advice. A lot of people just don't get it. Once you've made the adjustment, it's a lot easier to talk about, but don't be preachy. My dh and I were on for a week, had a church picnic, and didn't even feel we could eat. Not a good feeling. A couple of weeks later we went to dinner with friends from church, and didn't order an appetizer, etc., and they asked what the deal was. We explained somewhat, trying not to make them feel guilty for eating the bread with honey butter that had been delivered, and we just really didn't have an issue with it.

Now, nearly 2 months in, I could probably tell anyone about the way I choose to eat. We have the proof that this is what is good for us, weight loss, more energy, stomache issues gone. I do wish I had found this group at the very beginning.

I also agree with all those that say read, read, read. So much info out there. Marksdailyapple and Robb Wolfe are good places to start.

Unless they want details on axactly what I'm doing, I just tell them that I am eating low carb and naturel unprocessed food . Maybe because oif Atkins, everyone seems to accept "low carb', and naturel unprocessed foods sounds so healthy.

I'm starting tomorrow, but I've been reading up on it for months now, I've just been dragging my feet because I felt like I needed a more organized plan of action since my husband won't go primal with me. I found www.wellnessmamameals.com and am really more confident that I'll be able to do this.

I don't know if you do the cooking in your house, but you could "sneak" it to your husband. I didn't tell mine what I was doing, bit started cooking our meals primally and he's eaten a few tortillas here and there, or a piece of bread..but even right now he's staring at his cheetos he just had to have at the store and muttering about how they're kinda gross and how he shouldn't have gotten the big bag  He has no idea WHY he doesn't want to eat junk as much anymore, he just knows he doesn't want it

I have been [trying] to eat primal/paleo for quite a while now. People around me are not that supportive or knowledgeable about it and still worship at the Church of Whole Grain. When I cook for my sister and myself, I tend to stick to "clean eating" concepts as she favors that, but for myself I do much better on low carb and gluten free for IBD reasons. I get tired of people scoffing at my Mark Sisson and Robb Wolf books. PLEASE add me if you like, I need all the encouragement I can get.

You might want to cut back your sugar slowly or you will quit easily. The sugar is the driving crave for the carbs. So first cut back the sugars and then carbs.

I encourage you to eat bacons more than usually while you are trying to cut the carbs, it helps you to love paleo more than what you used to eat.

Thanks for all of the great advise and reading material. I've been reading a lot! I'm going to clean out the kitchen and plan on starting this weekend. My fiance is on board - although I'm sure he'll cheat a little more than I will. I have done low carb before, and I already try to stay away from sugar. I appreciate the support!
