tomorrow is suppose to be my 1st day starting stage 1, but i am feeling kinda uncomfortable about some of the exercises. the weight room at my gym is pretty small, and mostly full of machines. the area where most ppl do free weights is usually very crowded, so i have no idea where i am suppose to do things like the push up's:noway: not only is there not much room, but i can probably only do like a handfull of them, and i'm so embarrassed :frown: i dont want everyone to watch me and laugh at me for being so weak.
has anyone else had an experience like this? how did you handle it??:embarassed:

I don't think anyone is going to laugh at you. Most people are two concerned with their own workouts, and everyone was a beginner at sometime.
Is there an area where people stretch? That's where I do some of my exercises.0 -
:ohwell: the stretching area is upstairs, and the weight room is on the main floor0

Your concern is one that most of us encountered at one point... it will get better as you progress. You will get a better feel for your workout and what works best. It's one of those things that you just have to throw yourself into it.... just focus on you and your workout. Bring a clipboard, water, towel and look like you mean business. "Fake it 'til you make it." Good luck!0

The first workout is definitely going to be the hardest. It can be very intimidating and I know I'm always concerned that people are watching me, but honestly most people are focused on their own workouts, not what other people are doing AND you are there for you and not all those other people. Try to just let it go, exude confidence and they won't even question you. I've had to do pushups in between machines before, it really doesn't matter where you do them as long as you get them done. If you can't do them on the floor, use a bench or a box or an aeroboc step. If you need to bring them from another room, then see if that's possible. Good Luck!!0

At first, it was very weird and uncomfortable to work out in the free weight area. I would do my weights there and move as far away as possible to do my other things. Now, I just find a space and do my thing. There is a space near the entrance of my gym and free weight area that has some floor space, so I set up my step there, or put down a mat, or grab a ball... Sometimes, if it's crazy busy, I'll take a mat or a ball to the back corner to do my ab stuff. I really don't care what people think of what I'm doing. I have as much right to be there as anyone else, and other people do some crazy looking things, too.
Actually, I kind of care, because I really dig getting that "bro-approval" nod from the heavy lifters when they see me lifting real weights. If anyone is paying attention to you, it's only because they're curious about your workout. I find myself watching others sometimes, just to check out what they're doing, because they're in good shape and I'm always interested in learning. My spin instructor was asking me questions this past week after watching a few of my exercises in Phase 2 and remarking about my progress. Sometimes, I like to watch the people who lift really heavy -- study their technique and just be awed by their strength. I don't stare rudely, though.
I have only had one bad interaction with any guy (or girl) in the free weight area since I started, and he was just a jerk anyway. Everyone else has been at the least polite and the most helpful, so don't sweat it -- you'll get through the first few workouts and it will get easier!0 -
Ok girlfriend. First of all DONT BE EMBARRASSED! Do you think all those "meatheads" just magically got to the point they're at now, looking bulk and strong? Absolutely not. Everybody has to start somewhere. I still struggle with push-ups but you know what, al that matter is you are there and you're making yourself better. You're already doing better than so many people who won't even attempt! You have EVERY RIGHT to be in that corner as everyone else so OWN IT. When I go to my gym, I'm usually the only girl in there lifting. I'm sure the boys are all thinking, "get this girl out of here but guess what, I don't give two cents what ANYONE thinks and neither should you! All that you should compete with is the person you were yesterday. Everyone starts somewhere, the hard part is just getting started so do not be afraid!!! Good luck! Can't wait to hear about it0

About the embarrassment - just GET OVER IT. This is about YOU, making the necessary changes to obtain the optimum fitness level for YOU.
GO GET IT! It's there for the taking!!0 -

That sounds perfect actually. You get a little extra cardio in between your lifts . It's what I do!0
