I am still rather heavy (body weight) and am wondering should I wait to start this when I am closer to goal or...?

I'm pretty heavy still too and just finished stage 1. I'm currently in rest mode waiting for stage 2. I say go for it! Only thing, look for inches lost, not necessarily scale loss. You may gain a little in the beginning but it will most likely be water.0

Muscle burns more calories than fat does, so definately try to build some muscle.0
