Running in the desert

So I started the c25k challenge at 210lbs because the heat in Vegas is killing me with my weight. Anyone have any suggestions on how to run for extended periods of time in temperatures as high as 130 degrees? I bring a bottle of water and stay hydrated but man is it hard. Even suggestions on proper nutrition in this heat would be beneficial.

Holy cow, I can't handle it when the temp is above 90°, can't even imagine 130°!

What's the temperature like at midnight? Or is there a nice air-conditioned gym with a track available near you?

I'm a newbie desert runner, too! I live in Phx and have made a habit of getting up at 4:30 AM and being on the trail by 5 AM. It's not really "cool," but it's way better than the midday 100+ degree temps with the sun beating down on me. I wear a hydration pack with ice water (and ID, car keys, first aid kit, and cell phone) in it and sip on that during the walk periods. I don't eat before my run, but keep a light, healthy snack with me just in case I need it. When I get home I will eat a healthy breakfast with some type of protein (usually egg) and continue drinking water throughout the day. The biggest thing I have found is staying hydrated. Don't forget you're sweating out a lot of fluid and electrolytes in that kind of heat and you will need to replace them. I just finished W3D1 this morning and will be moving on the W3D2 tomorrow. I'm moving through the program at a slightly accelerated pace since I only have until Sept 22 before my first 5K!!

The sad thing about this place is there is no wind so the concept of cooling down with night fall doesn't happen...its still 130!!! As for the gym I wish but I always waste my money on a membership and then never go

I know what you mean about the gym memberships. I do that same thing. Such a waste..... I got lucky this morning and it was 78 degrees when I was out there at 5! However, it was a little rainy, so the humidity negated any benefit I would have felt from the cooler temp. And of course there was NO breeze, whatsoever. there usually isn't, but it felt like I was running in a steam room. All I can suggest for you is HYDRATE, go when the sun is down, wear some cool clothes, and listen to your body so you don't overheat. Good luck!
