Hello - I'm new to this group

I am 71 - still working full time as a social care trainer and am looking for support and encouragement from those who have dodgy backs and wonky knees. The serious wrkouts are not really an option.
Am finding gardening very successful as exercise - loads of bending and stretching and can wander about with a trowel when the body feels weak. Losing about 2lbs a fortnight which feels good. Clothes size going down a tad - at least everything fits better. Coming in below calorie count all the time but seem to be able to eat good, enjoyable food.
How are the rest of you oldies (but goodies) doing?

HI, I love the dodgy backs and wonky knees. Ain't it the truth. I have a bad spine from neck to butt, one knee replaced and now need a new hip. I love the elliptical. I wish I could garden, but just can't bend even so slightly, or I get pain. So, we do what we can do, don't we? Good for you on still working and finding gardening to your liking. I see a lot of the pals that do the garden and burn some very nice calories too. Good luck to you on your journey.0 -
Well I'm going to be 62 on the 23rd. In good shape dispite the fact that my body wants to let me down. I still work full time-plan to till I'm 66--then really hope to retire. My job is physically demanding and my body is suffering the consequences. Last week i got back to my thearpy exercises--they take me about 45 min. in the a.m. before work, but worth the effort. Need to do thearpy exercises for my neck, back, hip and most recently foot Other than that, I'm in good shape, and fortunately, I don't look like the e-rays I should (or feel like they read either). It's hard for me to accept all these physical things, because, I was always in great shape. My first husband died 15 years ago. People who knew me then and before knew me as strong and healthy as a ox. People that know me in the last 15 years know me as someone that has health issues from time to time. That really sucks. But I am trying to "embrase" this as my daughter says. The change of attituded\ and exercises help. My weight loss is slow, but it is coming off, and I have not gotten discouraged, which usually I do. Best of luck to you.:flowerforyou: Joni0

I am 55, but joined the senior group as my heart valve problems limit my activity tolerance so much, that i felt i would identify more with THIS group, than the general forums, where they discuss strenuous workout routines, etc.
Even though my activity tolerance is limited, (i know many seniors far more active than i am)
i can still walk,
so i am walking more.
and i keep reminding myself,
that even a person in a coma can lose weight!!!!
if the tubefeed is not enough calories.
Losing weight is about calories,
whereas overall health and fitness IS about exercise.
i feel, for me, my success is going to be rooted in my truly believing i CAN do this. I can get more healthy, stronger, more limber, more active, and weigh less.
I feel hope growing inside of me, i really do. I am finding even just the act of logging ALL my calories into the "Food Diary" is very helpful to help me develop new habits.0 -

Hi BlueJean4114. you are in the right place and hey, some places 55 is senior discount! Glad you are here and I like your determination already. I love that person in a coma losing weight, makes sense to me. Good luck to you. Please feel free to add me as a pal if you would like too.

Hi Joni, I know what you mean about not feeling like the xrays show, well I used to, now I do feel it. It is hard to accept that our bodies are changing and causing trouble for us. But, as you said, the change in attitude does help and PT sure does too. I am so glad that you have made time for it. and I want to wish you a Happy Birthday coming up!0

Hi BlueJean, I also have valve disease. I am 59, had valve repair at 36, but I am probably going to have to have valve replacement in the near future. Walking at your own pace is what works for me too. I also have Fibromyalgia, so it's kind of a double whammy. good luck to you.0
