Protein powder is helping me

I have UC. I'm in remission and on Lialda and 6MP.

I've been taking protein powder for two weeks and my bowels have calmed considerably. I drink one to two glasses per day. A fellow nurse told me it's the glutamine. I read about Glutamine on Wikipedia and here's a portion:

Studies link glutamine-enriched diets with maintenance of gut barrier function and cell differentiation.[13] Glutamine may help to protect the lining of the gastrointestinal tract or mucosa. It has been suggested that people who have inflammatory bowel disease IBD (ulcerative colitis and Crohn' s disease) may not have enough glutamine. However, two clinical trials found that taking glutamine supplements did not improve symptoms of Crohn' s disease.

Any thoughts?

very interesting. i have done protein powders on and off but never really paid attention to glutamine levels before. are you replacing meals with the drinks? if your gut isn't working so hard, maybe that's also helping it calm down? just a thought.

I personally believe protein powder could be helping in a lot of different ways - depending on what protein powder you take. There are some protein powders that also have some bad foods for your gut.
I have been drinking protein powder since the last month and seen considerable amount of improvement. Not to mention protein helps our bodies recover after the flare-up. Most of the weight that we lose during flare-ups is our muscle mass (as protein powder enhances muscle growth again)
So, in short, I also see improvement with protein powder. Glutamine could be the factor but not the only one. That's what I believe

Wow, you both have very good points!

I'm taking it in addition to meals just to incfrease my protein and to fill me up instead of junkfood.

I agree that we lose muscle mass during a flare. I lost 20 lbs during my last flare and it was noticable.

    Thanks for your thoughts.

I've never heard of protein powder being recommended - is there a particular make or brand I should look for to use?

My UC is currently grumbling away and causing me bother, not quite in a full-blown flare but would like to avoid that if possible - just want it all to settle down! Protein powder could be worth a shot at least??
