Justification

So I started back to work... and I've already heard that I eat too much sodium, that I need to watch my saturated fat... that people with high cholesterol should never low carb... etc etc. The best was, "Not everyone can low carb and eat the high amounts of fat like you do - they would need more protein." UGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGH.

Experiences? I have read so much about HFLC that I feel like I know this is what is good for me. Maybe not everyone, but good for me. But then I feel like a huge *kitten* when I am constantly correcting them with what I've learned.

Annoying! Experiences? Comments?

Today one of my coworkers added me on MFP and saw that I had a T-bone for dinner last night (yes, it was delicious) and sent me a link on how low fat is the way to go and pretty much implied that I would die before age 35 if I don't stop eating steak. I lol'd and texted a link on how to make a bacon explosion.

    That'll show em!

Seriously!? Ugggh! Low fat is so high carb. I know, I've done it. I can see how they all think that the steak is bad for you - we've been told it over and over again..

Bacon explosion! I must look this up!

Just smile and say "Thank you for the advice, I will take it into consideration."

What you eat is absolutely nobody's business but your own, unless you're asking someone to evaluate what you eat. And there's no need to justify yourself and no need to try to change anyone else's mind.

Get your blood work done, go low carb, get the blood work done again later? I guess that's the only way to truly tell for yourself. If you read Dana Carpender's book How I Gave Up My Low Fat Diet and Lost Forty Pounds there are tons of examples of where people's cholesterol and other numbers improved after going low carb.

I mainly work from home so I don't have office worker issues (which I'd ignore anyway ;)) but my OH was initially disapproving for all the Conventional Wisdom reasons.

After seeing the physical and mental change in me over the last few months she doesn't seem to mind so much now. :)

We are, as a family, also eating way less bread, pasta, rice, sugar and processed food so I say lead the way, be the example and let others join if they want to.

There are plenty of people out there following the same path and it will get even more popular as people like us get results.

Eventually the ridiculous statements about the dangers will fade away but it will take time.

I had a chat to a young guy in a bottle shop (alcohol shop) the other day about low carbing and "paleo" as he was also a fan.

These are interesting times what with the likes of Lustig and Taubes getting recent mainstream media exposure.

I see that today obesity has been linked to the development of Alzheimers. This is hardly surprising if you read the studies and follow the practice of excessive carbohydrate exposure down the line. It's all about inflammation.

So, people who restrict fat also develop mental issues? And you say the brain is mostly made of fat? Hmm, hold on Sherlock, I think I can see some way these things could be linked ...

The internet is a catalyst and this way of living can only get more popular as people lead by example.

Funny: I did and told them that my results were all within normal range. They just kind of stare at you! :D I understand why... they don't believe what I believe/haven't read up on it.

Going to write that book on my list!

Agreed! I was discussing yesterday after school that I eat way more calories now than ever before, love every minute of it, and have steadily lost about a lb a week since my initial water loss. I am going to just keep doing what I do... hopefully people will see the positives and we can have a discussion about it.

I'm going to make a list of links and readings... I think when people start spouting BS I will send those to them in case they want to see what I've heard.

Also, my friend started talking to me a couple of weeks ago about The China Study. OH BOY!

This. How does what *you* eat affect them??

I'd then ask them how their diet is going...but I'm evil like that.

Ah, The China Study ... Cue Denise Minger :)

    http://rawfoodsos.com/2010/07/07/the-china-study-fact-or-fallac/

Denise Minger's up-coming book is called "Death By Food Pyramid", which has to be the bestest title ever.

    Lead by example people :)

Yeah I gave up years ago with people at work and their reactions to eating low carb. I know they all think that I'm crazy, but in the last year I've seen many people in the office attempt loose weight with the typical low fat, tons of rice cakes and salads, etc. They've all stayed the same or gained in the same time that I've lost over 65lbs, gained muscle, and got in better overall shape.

They all look at me like I'm nuts, and I get the hateful glares from the gals that are constantly on a diet while I'm in the lunchroom eating steaks with cream sauce, bacon wrapped meatloaf, and other tasty concoctions. When they ask me how I do it, I just get the typical "That's gonna kill you" response most of the time or blank stares.

I'll just keep slimming down fat wise and bulking up muscle wise and maybe they'll eventually come around. If not...oh well, not my problem.

That is AWESOME! WTH with them seeing the results and not looking it up/researching it/trying it. I guess everyone's different... but when they try to get me to eat a cookie and I turn it down and explain I can't eat it... I want to be like, "WHY would ANYONE eat that cookie!" My husband called me a diet nazi the other night - LOL!

I simply say my doctor, 70 pounds, and perfect bloodwork says you are wrong. Keep talking and I will have to call you an idiot.

Oh and now I look like a powerlifter not a fat tub. Those 70 pounds were reinforced by a lot of muscle.

    Thank you LCHF.

You've just made me laugh out loud for the first time today ... Idiot indeed.

The other advantage of eating this way is that we should see less doctors in the future due to less inflammation and whatnot.

I've just finished reading Wheat Belly for a second time, I missed so much first time around.

Less doctors = less kneejerk reactions and drugs/medicine to mask symptoms.

This is the wider picture that the 'I can lose weight by eating Pop Tarts and exercising like a loon, everything in moderation, a calorie is a calorie, look at my near pornographic profile pic for evidence" mob completely miss ...

It's about general health, a lean body is just a side-effect.

    Nice side-effect though :)

HA! My wife has called me a diet Nazi a few times.

Fact of the matter is that in my OPINION, the people that see others get results eating this way and either ignore or discount it as "dangerous" are too addicted to their wheat and sugar laden products to think clearly about what they are doing. How can eating whole, natural foods, tons of vegtables and such be wrong?!

Some are just plain weak willed and have "tried" low carb, only to fail within the first few days and eat that cookie or doughnut and say that low carb is a failure.

This exactly for me too. I used to be a lifter/bodybuilder in my younger years, and there is still a solid base of muscle under there that is showing up again. Somone at work the other day said "Dude, are you working out like crazy or something, you're looking STACKED!!" I explained that I TRY to work out a few days a week but it was mostly low carb stripping the fat away...of course most people within earshot gave me "that look" (you all know the one I'm talking about).

Thanks for the chuckles and I always get the same reaction when I turn down dessert, "don't you want a bite of this?" Arghh, it drives me crazy!
