Natural Hair Drama!

Hey Sista's!

In need of advice and this rate scissors. :explode:

I stopped relaxing my hair Feb 2010 after 9 years but in the last 4 moved to texturising and I would only do it once every 3 months and I'll admit I never kept up the monthly steam treatments and trims. I'm basically all natural now especially in the middle of my head and towards the back, it is so tough i cant pull a comb right through. My hair wasn't even this thick before relaxing. Go figure.

Anyway when I exercise I sweat in my head and my hair looks like a frizzy afro mess after every workout, I do put my hair in braids approx twice a year but find when taking out a lot of my hair follows (breakage I think) and not a fan of weave, tried wearing a bandanna but same frizzy result. I don't have the strength or patience to straighten after every workout and don't like applying too much heat.

Any advise on regimes/products you can advise to help me out?
I use Kera Kare shampoo, conditioner, hair sheen and moisturiser, Organics Olive Oil Hair Mayonnaise and Dr Miracles Treatment.

Thanks for your help.

    Hi SereneRose,

Just a few things...if you are texturizing your hair, you want to be sure to treat it the same way that you did your relaxed hair, because technically, you are still relaxing it. And if your hair is thicker now than it was when you were relaxing (using a chemical straightener more frequently and leaving it on to process longer than a texturizer), it's because you are not using the relaxer at full strength, and your hair is going to be thicker.

Now, about your workout hair, how are you wearing it when you workout? If you are just wearing your hair out, you are inviting a "frizzy afro mess", once you sweat, especially if you are trying to maintain straight styles. I do not wear my hair straight anymore because I know what sweat can do to a straight style, and I do not have the patience to straighten it daily (also I am heat free). Unfortunately, I do not know a way to avoid frequent straightening sessions unless you give up straight styles. However, I know that some ladies find success with pulling the hair in a taut ponytail. Pulling the hair taut helps the hair to stay straight, that way when you sweat, it does not frizz.

Braids are a convenient option, but if you are experiencing excessive shedding and breakage when you take them out, then I would not keep trying braids. They may be too tight. Why not try twists or braids with your hair? That could certainly help.

I hope that this can help you. I cannot recommend a regimen because I don't know enough about your hair, but I'm willing to try and help if you want to tell me more about your hair.

    Good luck!

    Hi.

Thanks for the info it has been very informative.
When I workout I put my hair in a ponytail but no hair sticking out, wrapped on itself, sometimes I stick a bandana on too. I sweat a lot on my head and my roots go very kinky/frizzy then my hair is wavy and high on my head which means I have to slick it down with gel which I hate or straighten it just so it stays down in place.

I will be going for the braids option again at Xmas not sure if they are too tight as they don't feel it when they are done, family say it is because my hair has not been touched in a while but i'm not so sure, I have lost a lot of length. I have been advised to stick a wig on which I may just consider but for now I think weekly steam treatments.

    Thanks again.
