My chief instructor/mentor/father figure announced to me today that when I take my maternity break in December, he will be retiring.

Yes, I've known this day was going to come. Since he closed down the dojo last year, there are about 4 of us who continue to work together. I also go to the instructors' clinics and visit other dojos.

I just know that he really loves this. When we meet at his house on Sunday afternoons, despite his health problems and pain, there is still a light in his eyes and a pep in his step when he is teaching us. If he stops practicing, I'm afraid his decline will be rapid.
    Just...sad.

Very disappointing. I guess you can find other palces to train and can still maintain the relationship with him. I have no deeper relationship with my instructors- they are all guys in their 20s who are more likely to punch you in the arm than anything else.

That's too bad. Maybe you and the other students could do something to show him how much you appreciate him?

That is very sad, I feel bad for both you and your instructor.

    This is an excellent idea.

I feel sad for both of you but a father/friend will always be like that so I hope you can still maintain that relationship with him after that.

Yes, I'm sure we can think of a way to show him our appreciation. And I'm sure we'll keep in touch.
    Thanks for your replies.
