I start my day with a smoothie. Ingredients are skimmed milk 200 ml, a medium size banana, 2 spoons of dark cocoa powder and 2 spoons of flax seed. This gives me energy at the gym, plus I read in a book that exercise on an empty tummy can have adverse effects. My bowel movements are regular thanks to the banana and the flax seed. Do you think bananas constitute to weight gain? Apples in fact have more carbs than bananas.... sort of confused. Is a change due or does my smoothie sound reasonable?

I was told that, with hypothyroid, I should cut down on added sugars and limit fruit to 1-2 servings per day. As long as you are counting your banana as one of those servings of fruit, I don't see how it could hurt.

That said, a lot of people recommend avoiding bananas because they are higher in calories than many other fruits. However, as long as you are keeping within your calorie goal, it really doesn't matter, and they are an excellent source of potassium.
