Hi Polly, can I ask why you are drinking Pepsi? have a look at the nutritional info. If you focus on making small incremental changes you will be amazed at the difference it makes. Gaing control over our blood sugars really is a question of learning what changes to make and then educating our taste buds accordingly.0

I really like that... learning what choices to make, and then train our taste buds accordingly...
Thanks.
I sometimes get so frustrated because what I eat doesn't feel as "satisfying" as I remember the _____fill in the blank_____ sugar or carb to be. I most miss fresh italian bread with butter... yummy!!!! But, if we can hang in there... the choices do begin to taste good, and we can experiment with them to make our taste buds pop even more.
Thanks for the reminder to be patient, and know that when I make the choices that help, the rest will follow.0 -
Sweets are what caused me to develop T2. I couldn't get rid of the cravings so I went off all starchy carbs and refined sugar for a month. It wasn't easy but it did the trick for me. I now have limited carbs and my FBS is rarely over 100. It may not be something you can do but it really works. And I drank regular Coke, candy, cookies....you name it. I haven't a Coke in months...I had 2 tiny cookies a few days ago for the first time in months and once in awhile I have a peppermint patty. I still cant believe I don't crave the stuff anymore, but I don't.0

In the end, you really need to give up soda. It sounds like you have not gotten into the mind set to address your problems. In honestly you just got to do it. Start by tracking your caloric intake here on MFP and start walking.
I really hope you decide to make an effort to take on your Diabetes and get motivated.0 -

so agree with you b1ghog. i just came off my meds 3 months ago and had my first labs since, last week and mine were 5.9. it has so nice to be able to just eat right and exercise to stay off the meds. i won't go back.
i was a big diet coke drinker, now i may have one once a week. when i am craving something, that's what i have and it works.
one day at a time is all it takes.0 -

Congratulations! I hope to be able to do the same as you. My next Endo appointment is 17 Oct. My plan is to get down to the point where I am off my oral medications, and stay off.0 -

I don’t know how long I’ve been diabetic but I was diagnosed about a year and a half ago. I used to drink 2 or 3 20oz regular Cokes a day. A1C was 9.6, dropped the Coke and was able to get the sugars under control, then started walking and started losing weight. My last couple A1Cs were in the high 4’s low 5’s range and I’m off all my diabetic meds. It can be done, give it your best shot, you’ve only got one!0 -
Liquid sugar is one of the worst things for me. The only juice I drink is low carb like cranberry with splenda that only has a couple carbs per glass. Last time I had regular juice was to treat a hypo. I only drink diet pops. With no fiber or fat liquid sugar dumps right into your system.
Changing your eating will really help your BG. I normally eat 4 to 6 times a day so I can spread my carbs out. A good start for you would be the diabetic diet. It is higher in carbs than many diabetic eat but it sounds like it would still be lower than what you are used to.
I agree with Crochetlover, when I went super low carb for a few month and low carb for a few more months it really cut out my cravings. With new drugs I have been able to increase my carbs a lot and do feel much better but I still don't crave a huge amount carbs. In fact, my biggest weakness is fruit.
Walking or other exercise will also help your BG.
You should meet with your dr. Having BG in the 500s is very bad and you may need more insulin along with diet and exercise changes. Some people cannot control BG without drugs but you should still try to take care of yourself so you can minimize your drug use. I have never been able to control by diet and exercise alone and as the years go by I need more and more drugs. I still watch my food and try to get exercise regularly. For the record I have been around 350 but that was during the month they tried diet and exercise control only. Once I was on met I don't think I've been over 250 and since I've been on amaryl I think my max has been 170.0 -
Yes, I've had 539. I've been trying to bring it all down. My last labs were horrible. My A1C went down from 12.1 to 10.4 but my kidneys are throwing protein into urine. I'm terrified. I've gotten off of animal proteins and am on vegetable diet. My sugars have gone down to 140 which is great for me. Has anyone out there has the problem with proteins? Any suggestions?0

One of the first questions my physician asked me was if I wanted to drink my calories and carbs or eat them. I really thought about it long and hard as I absolutely LOVED coca cola and felt at that time that I desperately needed the combination of caffiene and sugar to make it through the day.
Soon after, I made the decision that my calories and carbs would come from food. At first, I switched to diet drinks and now I am trying to transition to teas and water (with lime and lemon slices).0 -

When you have high BG like the both of you have you need to call your dr. If you have done all you can with your diet and exercise then your meds need to be upped. While it is great that many people can eventually get off meds, some can not. I was 34, did an hour of aerobics and an hour or 2 of walking, and farm chores daily. When I was diagnosed I stuck to the ADA diet to a T. My BG went from 300s to 200s and stuck there. After a month they put me on drugs and every few years they increase the doeses/meds. I believe at this point I am somewhere around 5 to 8 lbs from my ideal weight and by ideal I mean wearing a bikini without being self concious. I wear a size 2 or 3 US in jeans. Until my hip and treadmill became unhappy last month I was walking and running nearly every day. I think I was at about 30 miles per week maybe a little more. My carb intake was around 70-100 grams a day. My BG was still a little high so I was put on another drug. I'm due to go in to the dr. in another month or so. He is planning on putting me on a BP drug that will also protect my kidneys. My BP is low/normal but since I hope to live a long life and have been diabetic for so long rot is a huge issue.
Anyway, if you are routinely over 200 you should call your dr. Really, you should be calling your dr if you are routinely over about 165 or if your fasting is over 126. It is believed that rot starts somewhere between 145 and 165.0
