Pregnancy and Calories

Hi Steve,
I am currently 24 weeks pregnant and have gained roughly 30lbs. My doctor tells me that I need to eat at maintenance and in the third trimester ( which is a couple weeks away) to add about 250 calories. My current maintenance calories are about 2400.

I am really confused on exercise calories. My doctor said not to include them. When explaining that I am still running, lifting weights and doing high impact cardo 6 times a week and sometimes twice a day she said that was fine to just stay at maintenance.

I have stayed under my maintenance calories everyday in this pregnancy and have not been eating my exercise calories ( per the drs suggestion) and with the amount of deficit i have i have still gained about twice as much as i should have.

Before getting pregnant I was 6'2" 215lbs. Even though that weight puts me at obese i was by no means obese. I was in a size 10 jeans and medium size shirts. I lifted very heavy and would attribute alot of the weigth to muscle mass. I had expected to gain roughly 30-40lbs for the entire pregnancy and with 16 weeks still left until my due date I am up 30lbs already.

My big question is could the theory of starvation mode also apply to pregnancy? Coiuld i be gaining more weight then i should because I am not eating a suffiicient amount of calories? Could there be a chance that maybe my doctor is not quite fully understanding how many calories I am burning in my workouts??? I have a Polar HRM that takes into account my gender, heigh, weight, age and resting heartrate to determine calories burned so I would guess that my calories burned in workouts are pretty close to the actual number burned. I try to make sure I burn 500-700 calories per day in workouts
