dealing with travel...

Im very new to paleo - only on day 2. Im in that fun horrible headache area from lack of my diet sodas and sugar :) fun fun.

I almost didnt start until next week because we have plans this weekend but I knew I would keep finding excuses.

This saturday Im running a half marathon. Friday we are going down to be there for saturday. The day after we are going to Hershey park with the kids. So I will be eating out Friday night and all meals saturday and sunday.

Advice please!

I am debating being more primal for the weekend so I can do a protein shake saturday and sunday morning and just have coffee at breakfast with the family. I know after running Saturday that saturday night I will be starving. And sunday at hershey park I have NO clue how I will deal with that....

    Wow, you are one tough cookie to change your diet so drastically a week before a half marathon. I am a runner, and right after going primal, trying to run one mile was excruciating. That is until my body adjusted.

    Traveling is always a challenge. The only thing I can say is plan, plan, plan. Prepare some things to take with you. Determine what restaurants you are going to ahead of time and look up the menu online.

    Thanks - I was 80% wheat free before so Im used to having lower carbs and running. Granted in a perfect world my half would have been last weekend and I could have celebrated the end of the run with pie :)

    As for looking up restaurants - not really a possibility. This run is in amish country... all small little restaurants.

    Im way more worried about the day at the amusement park than anything...

    Im worried that I will just say "screw it" for the weekend and throw me way back :(

    Easy... Bacon and eggs, chicken or beef and veggies, Cobb salads are everywhere. Grab some fruit for a snack.
  • Silverwood amusement park was hell (can't bring food in, and their salads are all pre-pack-- at least the dressing was on the side, but they don't have lemon wedges to give you). So I ate a plain (vile) iceberg salad (well, a few bites of it), a few bites of husband's pork barbecue sandwich (which had sugary sauce all over it, which he ate bunless, but again, no real options). I didn't bother with anything the rest of the day-- there was nothing there. We decided to go elsewhere for dinner, which was equally unappetizing, unfortunately, but at least I got something in (fajitas sans tortillas completely lacking in spice, which were drenched in gods know what kind of oil, so bad that I drained my food on my napkin, and I never do that).

    So if you can bring food in, I definitely would. Had I realized what my options were ahead of time, I would have packed food in a cooler in the car and just gone out to eat there.

    Just do your best, and if you can bring food into the park, do it. Bring some healthy jerky, maybe make yourself a bag of trail mix, and eat a big meat/egg breakfast before you go into the park. The hotel at Hershey has a nice restaurant (but avoid the chocolate fountain!!!)

    The whole park smells like chocolate... not an easy place to avoid temptations. So if it were me, I would indulge, and buy a nice piece of DARK CHOCOLATE. You won't feel so left out of the chocolate fun. And you won't feel tempted by greasy burgers and fries that will definitely make you feel sick after.

    And, it's not so bad to be primal for the weekend, and start your strict paleo after if you want. The extra fat from the dairy might help to fill you since you may not get the fat by eating limited paleo.

    And if you decide to eat something off the paleo/primal menu, think of it as a conscious "treat" that you are choosing because you just RAN A HALF MARATHON!!! No guilt. You'll know it's a special treat, and you'll be eating a lifetime of healthy foods.
