I've just been exposed to Charles Staley's work and for the most part I like what he has to say.

The link below is to a lecture of his that covers a lot of good topics. He's very much a "functional" fitness guy, no ab work, preference toward compound movements, etc but his thoughts on exercise volume, intensity, and the like are really great and help to balance the less effective but more marketable mantras of just about every fitness/diet routine out there.

Also, on the page with the lecture links there is a box to the upper right that will give you a PDF, The 7 Secrets of Functional Fitness, if you add yourself to the mailing list. It's a short and worthwhile read.
