Anyone Messed Themselves Up with Inconsistent Fiber?

For those of you who have had the gastric bypass, I'm just wondering if you ever caused yourself any pain by NOT getting enough or suddenly changing the amount of fiber you eat.

I was eating at least 35 grams of fiber daily and things were smooooooth. But I decided to go back to basics with the diet that I started with my surgeon which was basically all protein and very little carb. So suddenly I cut my carb intake from 35 + grams to maybe 20 grams. It was all okay until the 2nd day (yesterday) when while sitting at work I was suddenly hit with a stabbing pain that felt like it was under my rib cage. It felt like my rib was broke and if I moved or took a deep breath the rib would puncture the lung. It was horrid. And scarey.

They took me to the ER and were concerned it may have been a blockage or something related to my surgery. They ran dye tests and cat scans and ultrasounds and put me on some wonderful pan medication that helped...... for awhile.

Finally they told me they were baffled. I had a horrible UTI and Kidney infection, but they didn't think that would cause that severe of pain. so they also said it looked like I had a lot of stool pushing on my diaphragm that could have something to do with it.

So ... what? I'm just full of it?

Of course they did say the UTI and Kidney infection could play a part in the pain too, but not at the level I was experiencing.

So I just want some of fellow "surgery sisters" to share if they've had anything similar? Am I going to need a high fiber diet my entire life? How much fiber do you get daily? What foods do you eat to get there?

Thanks!

Darla

I had gastric bypass 4 years ago and have never had that issue. I get a lot of fiber from the Ole High Fiber tortillas I eat. I hope you figure out what works for you!!

veggies are you best source of fiber if you want to stick to low carb and get your fiber in like in your honeymoon stage. And yes fiber is a normal part of any balanced diet and necessary for proper digestion.

I am just not sure one day of a low carb diet would cause these issues. Weeks maybe but not one or 2 days.

I adore those tortillas! I just discovered them a few weeks ago and now they are part of my diet nearly everyday!
