Wow 10 people already!!!! This is exciting and motivating. For those who have never done the South Beach diet, it is very rewarding if you stick to it. REMEMBER sugar is the enemy in Phase 1. I originally started SBD in 2008 and learned so much about what foods are good for you and actually fuel your body. I lost 8 pounds in week one then steadily lost 1-2 lbs a week. I fell off the wagon for a while, but I'm ready to get this last 30 lbs off for good!!! Let's do this together and succeed.
Also I downloaded the South Beach Diet app for my iphone....cost $1.99 but worth it. Recipes with photos, what foods you can and can't have for each phase, faq, anwsers to questions from "Which peanut butter to eat" and "What is the best time to exercise".

Thanks so much to Determined for starting this group!
Hi, my name is Nanc and I am excited as well. I actually began southbeach in June of 2008 ... I was 175 and did lose 40 pounds...kept most of it off...I am up to 140 (ugh, maybe a little more...afraid to look)....but for sure not more than 145.
Just want to let u know, you learn new eating habits...well, I did, And if I am at 145 (I will weigh in on our first day), that is only gaining back ten pounds since my lowest of 135 just last June of 2011*.
Phase one is tough...but it goes fast. And after the first couple three four days, you start to feel really energized. The supercharged book is still the "bible" if anyone is looking for the book. The app is good and will help out a lot. I have it also, but have not looked at it too much.
It is not just sugar we will be giving up on P1 but also grains...no starchy veggies either. It pretty much is lean protein, veggies (no corn, or potatoes...and when potatoes are allowed it is sweet potatoes)...corn is a no no...I always fought that one...I was not a perfect Phase 2'r. Also, low fat and non fat dairy...cottage cheese, FAGE yogurt is great and skim milk ricotta and skim milk. I was never a star pupil but I am going to do better..I will make sure I go over everything again in the days ahead.
Getting your kitchen ready for the first day, September 17th, will be very helpful. Temptation should be gone by then, or locked up and out sight by your spouse. Or however u wish to do it.
I will tell u this, it really gets rid of the cravings...the two weeks on phase one. So going without those two weeks is so worth it. If we stick together and know we are all doing it at the same time, it will be a snap.
Ask me any questions and I will help out the best I can. I have the book and all the cookbooks put out by Southbeach. It is a healthy approch to weightloss and I believe the best program out there.
PS Feel freee to add me as a friend if you are in our group.
* Now that I think of it, that is actually a lot (possibly ten pounds in just over a year). I will weigh in on Sept 17...gulp.0 -
I just went to my Kindle Fire to download the Southbeach book ...if you have Amazon Prime, you can download/borrow it for free. Just wanted to let u all know that.0

Hi ladies. I just joined the group. I have never done south beach before but a friend of mine did and had great results. I am going to be starting tomorrow though. I hope thats ok. I have 60 lbs that I would like to lose. I just had a baby on June 30th so I want to get myself back into shape but in the healthiest way possible.0
-
Of course it's ok...firstly, congrats on that aaaaaaadorable baby ...simply beautiful. Happy u r joining us...do ask questions if you have any, and let us know how u r doing.
I was just going over everything allowed on P1..there are so many options and you just have to be a bit creative to not cave during the two week "detoxing" period.
I already know I will be giving up my green drinks for the two weeks as no fruit allowed and I am not too keen on just veggies...so I will be switching to V8 for morning veggies. And half and half...I use it in my morning iced coffee so I will have to figure that out too...but whatevevr we are giving up, we will get back ten fold in terms of killing cravings and just feeling plain grrrrrrrrrrreat!:laugh:0 -
I love, love, love SBD! I have done it many times and have only had success/felt my best when on the SBD.
I went from 210 to about 152 on SBD, then gained a lot of it back over about 4 years in Vet school...it was just a really rough time. I've already lost about 15 pounds of what I gained doing SB these last few months, although I am ready for a recharge-reboot and to start all over again.
I have found that I do well in spurts - a couple pounds lost, then plateau, then a couple more pounds. This usually correlates with how close I stick to the SBD plan. I've never actually moved on to Phase 3 and usually stick to Phase 1.5 (i.e. adding back some fruit but not much else). I just don't do well with any kind of carb, whether whole grain, or not. But when in Phase 1.5, I do try to have grains periodically. In other words, I don't swear them off...I just avoid them 80-90% of the time.
For those of you who have never done SBD, the first 3 days of P1 are the hardest, but if you can get past those first few days, you'll find that it's totally worth it!0 -
First of all...so excited to see a VET in our group...I am ernestinesmom...ernestine is my little 9 year old schnoodle rescue. One of our members works for a VET...so that is too cool too.
Very excited to see so many people gearing up for the SBD train. I am great with keeping the added sugar far far away...but I do have to watch too many fruits...grains, I usually stick with Ezekiel breads and tortillas...and coach's oats for oatmeal.
Looking forward to hearing from everyone and getting ideas and tips. Also, help from everyone will be so appreciated! -nanc0 -
We need lots of suggestions for food ideas. I am not one to buy a weird ingredient for just one recipe so I keep it simple. I plan on buying these items below to get me started.....Any ideas for quick meals is much appreciated
Natural P-nut butter with less than 1g sugar
eggs
fresh greens and frozen veggies
ricotta cheese
plain non fat yogurt
turkey, boiled ham, boneless skinless chicken breast, tilapia
fat free cheddar cheese, shredded
cucumbers, bell peppers, tomato
cauliflower for "SB mashed potatoes"
sugar free jell-o cups and fudge popsicles
cottage cheese
black beans
string cheese
almonds
I'm not a cook by any means, I will try to do some cooking from the SB book, but mainly I will be eating lean meat with veggies, nothing too fancy. lol0 -
I started a list, too, dear, fearless leader: (I, too, keep my menu pretty simple ... really simple during P1)
Here's mine...(some duplicates to yours)
Eggs
albacore tuna
lean sirloin steak
boneless skinless chicken
wild caught salmon
green beans (they are great roasted)
V-8
Fage non fat plain yogurt
low fat cottage cheese
skim milk ricotta
Laughing Cow cheese
peanut butter (I have to be careful with this one...I love it too much) must be natural with no added anything cept, salt
celery
ice berg lettuce for tuna salad and egg salad
parmesan/reggiano fresh
cauliflower
sugar snap peas
sweet bell peppers...red,yellow, orange
egg beaters
spinach - frozen to make the veggie egg thingy for breakfast.
boca burgers
looking for more ideas...
ETA:
Sugar free jams and jellies and syrup...goes great with FAGE non fat plain yogurt...also I llike to add it to my low fat cottage cheese.
Flavorings...like orange and lemon extract...do check out that section of the market when shopping.
ETA #2: went to costco today...thought I had a winner in my cart...deli style turkey...got half to the checkout and THEN I looked at ingredients...brown sugar was in there...no wonder the sample tasted so good. Back it went.
I think I am going to stick with cooked boneless skinless chicken for now...I know what I am cooking and I am not adding sugar.0 -
Hi, kids !
I'm Mary Ann, and I'm a sugar addict ROFL
Just a short note ...... I basically follow SB, and have been doing it for almost 4 years ...... lost 40+ lbs & maintained ..... now I'm on MFP to shed a few more ......
My friend Nanc asked me to join this group ...... FAIR WARNING ....... it's been awhile ...... and I don't remember much about Phase 1, except no sugar & no booze & no fruit ...... I'd better dig out the old book, and start cleaning out my fridge, freezer, and pantry ..... again !
Can't commit to the "Shred" part either..... but I go to the gym 5-6 days a week ..... cardio, weights & yoga ..... hope that counts !
OK, gotta go .... the boss is reading this over my shoulder ...... will catch up with y'all later :drinker:0 -
So happy to see you...(btw, her boss is a VET)...Mary Ann (MA) works with the animals...and talks to em, too.
I am just going over P1, Ma...gosh, I did so great when I did it back in 08...now to do it all again. I just know I felt amazing and nothing could get me to cheat...abbbbbbsolutely nuttin!
Looking forward to hearing about everyone's plans and being along on their journey.0 -

Im starting today but a modified version of phase 1. I am having fruit but only 2 per day. Im doing this so I ease my way into it for the 17th. I am horrible with sugar so I figured this would be the best way. I did Atkins after I had my first child and I lost 30 lbs in 3 months. I was also going to the gym everyday for an hour. I liked atkins but I found it took forever to add carbs back which drove me nuts...lol Why don't we all introduce ourselves and state our goals. I will start
My name is Jen. I am just had my 3rd baby and I would like to lose 60 lbs by May 2013.0 -
Good morning everyone...My name is Nanc and our fearless leader, DeterminedHealthy asked if I would give her a hand in helping moderate our group. I will keep my book handy to look up answers to your questions...but please feel free to correct me and help out at any time...I am a bit rusty.
I lost 65 on my own (starting weight 240), prior to joining the SBD site in June of 2008. I began SBD at 175 and lost 40 pounds in about a year. I had the most success ever with this program...it is the elimination of all added sugar that truly has proven most beneficial to me...I do my best with going with whole wheat or whole grains...but as my diary shows, lately I have given in to the convenience of frozen meals which are not SB friendly. At least the ones I have been choosing. They are good, but not the best choice. Will use up what is in the freezer in the 10 days or so leading up to our official start date.
I plan on being a star pupil for the two weeks on P1. And any tips from anyone would be greatly appreciated. I live with my little mutt, Ernestine, so I have no one to blame if anything off program should find its way into my fridge or pantry.
My ultimate goal is to get to 121 pounds...however, my first goal is to get to 135...just getting back there (my lowest on SBD) will make me really happy.
Love to hear all about everyone's plans, goals and struggles. -nanc0 -
Jocelyn here, I live in beautiful central Florida, I am 32 happily married and have 2 cats. I am Real Estate Broker and work part time with my husband helping people buy homes. I lost about 20 lbs on the SBD in 2008. I stopped smoking and gained it back then some. Exactly 1 year ago this week i was up to 230 this is when I started walking daily and counting calories by using MFP. I did the 30 day shred in Jan - Feb and by April I was down 80 lbs!!! I was at 155! Then over the summer I gained 12 lbs. I just can't seem to get back into it, hince the reason I started this group I need to try shaking my routine up a bit.
Current weigh 167 @ 5'6" tall
My 1st and original goal is to be 145
My ultimate goal is 130
I want to lose 5 lbs a month0 -
Morning, glories !
Looking in my pantry, I have some work to do ...... how did that white rice, regular pasta & jarred sauce (the kind LOADED with sugar) get in there ???????
Am looking at my old SB book ....... not worried about breakfast ...... have eaten basically the same thing for the past 4 years ....... hardboiled eggs with slices red & green peppers, or sauteed onions & zucchini ...... and coffee with skim milk (I don't use sweeteners)
Now I need to figure out lunch & dinner menus ...... want to get organized ahead of time :drinker:
**** It's just me & my hubby, who usually eats what I give him ..... we have no kids at home now, so it's easy ...... some of you might have to work around those issues ..... and good luck with that *****

My husband is a picky eater and has bad eating habits. I got him to lay off the coca cola I will still be cooking him the sauage, egg and cheese sandwich with jelly for breakfast and cooking him taco's, but I will be ok so long as I have a stuffed up nose and can't smell anything, j/k lol wish me luck!
I have been trying to get organized too. tweeking my grocery list and trying to figure out what I need to buy at Sam's Club vs. the grocery store.
8 DAY COUNTDOWN!!!!0 -
You guys r too much.
I just added extracts to my list above in this thread... like lemon and orange...there is even a coconut extract...it does wonders to the skim milk ricotta cheese (I usually whirl that in the mini food processor to make it smooth)...nice little dessert.
Next Sunday I am going to poach some boneless skinless chicken breasts for the week...keeps well in Lock and Lock or whatever u use for storage. Easy for grab and go...and you can pull it apart easily when warm and use it like pulled whatever when u add a no sugar added sauce to it.
What else?
I just look forward to feeling so much better, actually. All the processed food (frozen) that has crept back into my life since I started work will be eliminated and with that I am sure some of the pain associated with degenerative osteo arthritis.
I mention that cuz this diet (and in life style eating)...is great for getting rid of the inflammation in your body that causes pain in your joints.
So happy Determined Healthy started this group. I have not been this excited about a program since I did it back in 2008...0 -
Great that we have a week to get organized...wanted to add that. Please post questions...and those of us that are familiar with the program will do our best to answer them.
Lists of food to enjoy and advoid and be found in the book. You can find the book on Amazon.com. If u have kindle fire (only mention that cuz that is what I have and have first hand knowledge)...and AmazonPrime...u can actually download it free cuz it is on the borrow list.
Mary Ann mentioned the libary...the regular walkin libary as a great place to pick up the book. The app is 1.99 for your iphone.
Best of luck to all u that live with peeps that will not be following this program...even though I know u will be setting a great example, sometimes they just need to see the results first for them to get on board.
Looking forward to hearing about everyone's plans leading up to the big start day.0
