Commuters

Hi everyone! I had a quick question, especially for the commuter students. I have about a 40 minute commute to school 3 days a week. I know one of the reasons I gained weight were my poor food choices, especially at school. So I was wondering if anyone had any good food ideas or recipes for a commuter. One of the things I would like to do is start (as high school as this sounds lol) packing my lunch.

Thanks!

~Danielle

I know exactly what you mean. College campuses are terrible about not having healthy choices; but I also understand that they make what most people buy and they have to make money. Most cafeterias have microwaves, so you could pack some leftovers from the night before if you want something warm. When I don't know what to take with me, I go to my default lunch: a turkey sandwich, Special K chips, and some fruit. It's quick, easy, and you don't have to worry about keeping cold/warm.

I commute one hour each way (at least) 5 days per week so I understand!

I pack my lunch. I normally bring a sandwich, rice cakes, something sweet for dessert, and a Diet Coke. I also bring a granola bar for a quick snack inbetween my classes. I used to feel very "high school" about it but I just explain that it saves me calories and money and people understand.

i always pack my lunches, its really made a difference in my calorie intake, & keeps me from getting so hungry that i hit fast food, or a vending machine. I usually pack sandwhiches, fruit, carrot juice, soup( which i can heat at school), my own green tea bags, i also like Kavli crispbread crackers & Laughing Cow cheese wedges that are lowfat, & always a water bottle. My commute is 40 miles one way, so this has really helped me.
  • I have both classes and work on campus as a grad assistant in the evening and always pack my dinner now! I always make sure to have a healthy snack with me too so I don't raid the vending machine. I've gotten into having diet sparkling green tea too instead of going for soda. If I ever eat on campus, which I haven't at all yet this semester, I will plan for it ahead of time and make sure it's not some sudden, binging on crap food kind of thing.

I work and study at the university, so I'm there every day, pretty much all day... I've had the problem too.
I always bring one container with my lunch and another with fresh fruits and veggies. I also bring an energy bar and tea bags with me to make tea for myself. It saves calories and money. :)

I try to make lunch you can eat cold, like sushi, because sometimes it's impossible to get to the microwaves with all the people raiding them.

I actually live on campus but several of my friends are commuters and I make sure they know they can keep food in my kitchen whenever they want. Sometimes they take me up on the offer and sometimes they don't but it still stands.
