So, I'm hosting book club next Wednesday, and we read The Hunger Games. Our book club rule is that hostess provides the main dish, and everyone else brings the other stuff. We try to theme the food to the book.

I actually just ordered rabbit loin from US Wellness Meats, and was thinking about making rabbit stew, but then decided that it was pretty expensive, there's not a ton of meat, and I don't really want to make rabbit for the first time with guests.

Any ideas of trusty, no-fail recipes that would align with The Hunger Games? You know you've all read it. Or seen the movie. I'll have about 6-8 people.

Huffington Post has a couple good ones: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/09/hunger-games-food_n_1333008.html#s763653&title=Herbed_Fish_Wrapped

The Herbed Fish sounds awesome, as does the Carrot Soup on the slide following the fish. Actually, any of them in the slideshow sound good!
  • Never read it and thought the movie was largely boring (more revolution! less running around in the woods!) but I would suggest squirrel in berry sauce :P

Seriously though, I think any sort of game would do well. Know any hunters who have some venison in the freezer?

^^^^^ the book is way better than the movie...gives more insight into the revolution and more detail beyond just running in the woods.

There is a pesky squirrel in my back yard who taunts my doodle and the next door neighbor's wolf hybrid. where's the sling shot? Maybe i could get him with one of my boys' suction cup arrows.

I'll check out that HuffPo listing. how did I miss that? I'm almost as addicted to HuffPo as I am to MFP.

Why don't you make a beef stew of some kind and just call it "hob stew" or "greasy Sae's stew." People will get the idea. Serve it withe some fresh bread from Peeta's bakery... you can make a gluten free bread or just abstain and have it there for those who do eat grains. For a treat serve dark chocolate covered strawberries like they eat in the capitol...

Sunflower seeds or a variety of nuts and seeds for Rue's district and a bowl of fresh mixed berries with whipped cream on the side for "nightlock"

...if you can't tell I'm kinda a fan..

It's been a long time since I read the books but wasn't Katniss always raving about the Capitol's lamb stew? Perhaps less off-putting than rabbit?

ETA: I hadn't seen the PP's answer above me when I posted this. Love those ideas!
