Statin Nation

This documentary came out yesterday on the big business of statins. http://www.statinnation.net/ You can rent it for $5 or pre-order the DVD. I haven't watched it yet, but it looks really fascinating. Has anyone watched it? If so, I would be interested to know your opinion.

    Haven't seen it, but I want to.

    I used to be a drug rep and sold a statin. All day, every day for 2 years.

    I can't tell you how many times I heard doctors say that they wish a low level of statins could be added to the water supply, so everyone would get them. Since most of their patients were obese or elderly, and usually both, they all had high LDL/low HDL and needed a statin to help lower LDL and raise HDL.

    All docs tell people that statin should be used ALONG with DIET AND EXERCISE, but of course, how many obese/elderly people actually eat healthy and exercise. Not many, at least in the US.

    Exercise --> raise HDL
    Eat healthy fats and lower carbs ---> lose weight ---> lower LDL

    Take some red yeast rice if you want, though you would have to have a lot of it to compare to the effects of a statin drug.

    If only we all ate Paleo/Primal, most people wouldn't need statins. I hope never to need the drugs I sold (except for the HPV vaccine I sold... I'm a big proponent of that one!)
