PCOS

Any ladies with PCOS have success or trials with primal/paleo?

I started this spring and lost 10 pounds. Then summer hit and I was gone to conferences for a month straight with no control over what I was eating. I pretty much tried to stick to gluten free as much as possible, but that was about as paleo as I got. With the month long hiccup I gained the 10 back.

I am starting fresh tomorrow....just grilled the chicken for my salad:)

But I wondered if there were any ladies out there that have effectively gone primal to lose PCOS weight?

I don't have it but going gluten free would make sense to try and see if it relieves symptoms, since so much of the issue with PCOS is inflammation.

I don't have it - but I have a good friend who does and she eats a low carb, gluten free diet to control her symptoms. Her diet is pretty much a primal diet - we swap recipes all the time.

I have PCOS and am Insulin Resistant. I was on Metformin when trying to concieve (and required fertility assistance to get pregnant), but now just take BCP to keep my hormones/cycle regular. Otherwise I don't ovulate/menstruate at all. I've been eating Paleo for almost a month now, and already my cycle is trying to reassert itself. I had breakthrough spotting about a week and a half before I'm due to end my cycle, which NEVER happens. My facial hair growth (mostly on my chin) has decreased dramatically, as well, and I'm noting an improvement in my IR symptoms as well - not experiencing the blood sugar rollercoaster/crashes, my energy is way up, and I don't feel the need for a nap in the afternoon or snacks between meals. I've lost almost 10 pounds in the past month, so it's a steady, healthy weight loss, and I believe that this way of eating is doing very good things for my PCOS. Time will tell, but it makes me hopeful that I could conceive on my own if I continue this way.
  • Doesn't seem to have improved things so far for me, but eh. There are worse things than not having a period, ever (despite being on BCP). I just figure that if I don't get pregnant by the time I'm 35, I won't have kids. I'm pretty cool with that-- kids are as much of an inconvenience as they are wonderful, so... I'm good with it either way.
  • When I stick to it religiously, I have had good success with weight loss and reduction of some PCOS symptoms.

That said, when I am "on", I try to keep my carbs below 60g/day. And when I maintain that carb level (or lower) that has been absolutely key in my weight loss.

I recently also "fell off the wagon" and gained back some of the weight I had lost. Still trying to find my grove, but improving every day.

Eating this way was originally recommended to me by my doctor to bring PCOS under control (doctor also has PCOS so she is very understanding!).

I have definitely seen a reduction in symptoms and now that I've finally settled down with this way of eating as a long term lifestyle I wouldn't go back. Last year for a few months I ate SAD and PCOS symptoms started to get worse so it was a clear indicator for me how important this change is. I still find there are a few things I really need to be careful with such as sweet potatoes and root vegetables. As I am more a primal eater I do have some occasional cheese and butter but I still need to keep those very limited.
