You have to decide to stop smoking then follow through. Many of us have quit multiple times. This last (and final) time finally stuck for me because I decided I was never going to smoke again, ever. In the past I had the attitude that I would *try* and not smoke. This time, after my last cig I immediately considered myself a nonsmoker. That was it, I was done. Until you make that ultimate decision, there are no "attempts," you don't "try," you have to go and actually do it.

Yoda said it best, "Do or do not, there is no try."

couldnt have said it better, if you arent certain that you dont want to smoke and/or you think you are going to "try" to quit then dont bother. it is good that you have limited yourself to work time as a start but you wont be successful until you get your mind in the right place.

you can and will do it when you really want to, is today the day you really want to?

Based on my experience and the experiences of most smokers I have known, making an exception for one reason (just at work, or just when drinking, etc.) only leads to more exceptions until before you know it you're smoking as much as ever. It's GREAT you've cut down but I agree that to truly quit, a person needs to decide to be done and stop simply "trying."

I struggled with that for years. I always tended to get a couple weeks under my belt and find an excuse to have "just one." After ER visit #2 this year due to asthma, I realize I can't lie to myself anymore. I was on a nebulizer (breathing treatment) yesterday and was crushed to know- this is it- there is NO way I can EVER smoke again. How messed up does a person have to be to be on a breathing treatment and be upset about not smoking anymore?! THAT scared the crap out of me. I've been "good" the past week anyway but was reallllly tempted to have "just one" and was planning on making an October Vegas trip an exception. Not anymore. At this point I don't have a choice but to quit for good so I refuse to give those temptations another thought- the more I dwell on it, the more likely I am to give in.

Good luck! You can do this!

I too am a shift worker and suffer the same way you do...
I claim to only smoke at work....
FIRST it was only at work...then only when I have a drink...then only when I'm with a certain friends.....THEN I started buying butts before I was out to make sure I didnt run out.....suddenly my little slip turned into a full blown relapse after not smoking for 9 years.
I have had to stop going out on breaks with people who smoke (cant hang out with the cool kids no more=( cause I smoke when I do)
I have since STOPPED all smoking and avoid people and situations where I may be tempted. I use nicotine lozenges to ensure I dont put a butt to my lips. Getting on three weeks now....YOU CAN DO IT!!!
You just have to really want it!!
