Hi, I'm Jennie
I'd like to start out with a 5K 10min mile goal. This will be quite a challenge for me, I'm guessing. I know I can last for 3 miles but including the speed goal is going to make it sufficiently hard for me. I think I've only ever done an 11min mile in the past, but I've not logged my speed that often. I'm fairly new to running. I ran cross country ages ago in high school but haven't done much with it since... I mostly walk, jog, and weight lift these days. I think adding in distance running & intervals in a program like this is just what I need to round out my workouts.
Thanks Bean!

Welcome!!! Start with a mixture of endurance slower runs, and some faster run/walk intervals, and you got this!!!! So glad you joined!0

I'm a little embarrassed to post my first run stats...
1.53 mi in 22m:20s. First personal best 1 mile of 14m:05s .
Oh well... I've done better, lots better. Earlier this spring I did 1 mile in 11 min. I've got my work cut out for me0 -
My 3rd run:
Endomondo: 2.20 mi in 30m:20s. Personal best 1 mile of 12m:54s which is a 1m:11s0 -
Nice work! Are you following a training plan?0
-
I'm just running every 3 days. And going to gradually increase my distance as I do my speed.
Lift, run, rest, lift, run, rest... something like that.0 -
Nice job. I've been doing run walk intervals increasing my run times. Its getting better.0

I wanted to run again today but I am TIRED! Lol... that run yesterday was a bit more intense than I realized... I had full intentions of running again this morning. I did bench presses and push-ups yesterday after that run, so that might have something to do with it. I ate a lot to recover, was ravenously hungry. So I just ate like 3/4 of my food for the day all in one sitting. I think it probably helped. I'm not sore like I probably would be.
Going to take a rest day today though and then it's squat day tomorrow. We'll see if I can run after that. Doubt it! Looks like I'll probably be track to run again on Saturday.0 -
There's a 5K about an hour's drive from my house @ 8am on Saturday. I'm thinking about showing up for that. I've never signed up for a race. What should I wear? Compression shorts? Tank top? Anything I need to know? It's a short race and I'm not worried, but any pointers would be greatly appreciated0

Howd your race go?0

I ran 5K in 33:07... so a 10:40 sec mile. We were rained on. It wasn't terribly cold and it definitely wasn't hot. Just right temp wise, though the rain made it chilly. It was tough, won't lie. I had to walk a few times, but ended up with a decent time for my 1st race I guess. My husband ran it with me, at the last minute. So having him there helped. Though having him talk my ear off on the ride back was annoying... all I wanted was complete silence to recover It was harder for me than it was for him. I was red-faced and very winded at the end.... I need to train more and get conditioned.0

Good job. I'm nervous about mine next Sunday. I don't feel ready for it by any means. I started training using c25k but it seemed to easy. I have just been increasing my running time & decreasing my walk time or increase my walk speed.
Congrats on finishing.0 -
Thanks
I wouldn't worry about it too much. I pretty much went into my race unprepared. No soreness afterwards, nothing. I credit the heavy lifting for that! I just gotta work on my VO2 max. You actually seem better prepared than I was, to be sure. From your logs.
Ok, so my plan for this week (thanks to Bean's help & suggestions) is to run 2-3 miles Tues, the same on Thursday, and then a 5 mile run on Saturday. I'll be doing some lifting for upper body the other days, as well as a rest day thrown in there somewhere.0 -
I think that's a great time! Good luck on your runs this week.0

Sounds like a good plan. I personally wouldn't be able to go from 2-3 miles to 5 running nonstop. I looked at the treadmill mileage last nite & had only run about 1.6 miles before the first break. I struggle. I'm hoping the energy of everyone else will keep me motivated to just keep going when I want to walk. I am very surprised with my progress so far. I'm worried that I will get bored at the scenery since its in town. I have no problem running when the t.v. show catches my attention. I lose track of time. But then when there are long commercials or I get bored with the show I start struggling telling myself just 30 more seconds, then after I reach that just 30 more. Lol. I have to push myself each time I run to just run a little further.0

I walked 4 times at least during the 5K, so I know for a fact I'll be walking often in that 8K. I'm just gonna try to up my endurance as much as I can before then. I thought it was in 2 weeks, but realized I have 3 weeks now. So that gives me a little extra time. I'd like to maybe just cut my walking time in half and be satisfied with that.0

Thats great. Im my worst critic. Im sure you will do it.0

Did you start any program, or are you just doing it on your own? I finally downloaded the C25K app on my ipod on Sunday. I'm hoping to get home early enough to use it tonight! Have a "Rachel's Challenge" thing at my son's school at 7.0
-
So far just doing it on my own. Bean suggested twice a week, 2-3 miles, then 5 miles on Saturday. I was looking at Hal Higdon programs a couple nights ago. I think I will use his programs after this point. At least as a guideline or something. That is, if I progress past 5K and 10K to the longer runs.0

I am so excited that the weather is finally cooling off here in Phoenix. I'm hoping to keep progressing in running after all my 5k's. I wish I had someone to run with. I noticed when someone is on the treadmill next to me I seem to run longer. I do get bored quite easily.0
-
One of my friends texted me earlier and said she was just put on bp meds, so I told her we need to start walking together. Maybe I can talk her into doing C25K, too! If you've already done a 5K, I guess 2-3 miles should be pretty easy for you. I looked at that and thought YIKES! I have no idea how far I've gone, I've only done it by time.0
-
Cooler weather... oh yes. I'm in Alabama and it's so damn hot here up until October, it's when it finally starts cooling off. We have such a short fall & spring...
I'm actually getting really scared thinking about running in cold weather. Definitely going to look into one of those things that go over your mouth. And ears.0 -
Cupcake... the 3 miler was not easy for me. I mean, I did it and I probably could have gone another mile or so... but I was feeling like hell. It was because I started out too fast. It really hurt me to start my pace out too fast like that, so I'm trying to work on staying at the right pace from now on. It was hard because when you're in a race like that, with all those other runners, you definitely feel pressure to kick it up a notch0

I've heard that having all those people around you pushes you to do more. I can't wait to get to the point where my legs don't start to feel like lead after 3 minutes. Can you do 2 miles ok?0 -
The crazy thing is my legs felt like they could go for miles, no kidding. My legs weren't a bit sore after the 3.1 miles. It was my breathing/lungs/VO2 max that needs LOTS of work... basically, my muscles are in great condition due to weight lifting, though my endurance sucks... aerobics-wise0

Thanks. Wish it was the average speed I slowed my pace to what I could sustain. This run felt TONS better than my 5K race though. I felt like I could probably double the distance at that speed, which is probably what I'll work on soon. Going to probably start doing a 3 miler 5 days per week now. And just slowly increase speed.0
-
That is very cool! I finally clocked the distance I run on Main Street. It's just over 2/10 of a mile, so I'll have to remember to count how many times I've gone back and forth so I can figure out about how far I've gone.0

Don't you have a phone with a GPS app?0
