I have been doing a 1200 calorie diet trying my best each day, walking on treadmill for 3 miles each day at 3.5 speed, drinking water and can't seem to loose anything. I have hypothyroid and taking levothyroxine for about 4 years, my levels are great was just tested and I am only on 50mcg.........PLEASE WHAT CAN I DO TO LOOSE FEW POUNDS? SHOULD i ADD COCNUT OIL?

:flowerforyou: Hi Angel,
You're in exactly the position I was, when I started adding virgin coconut oil to my diet. Of course I would recommend it, it worked for me! Also rotating your calories up & down works too. You may not be eating enough, so your body will go into starvation mode. Try rotating from say 1100 calories on your lowest day, gradually adding 100-200 calories a day(each day going up) for 4 days, then rotate. You will be surprised, I always lost weight the day after the highest calorie day.
If you add the coconut O. mix it into something that you eat... melt on your vegge's, I mix into my oatmeal & oatbran. (I looked to see your menu, to suggest other ways, but you have your menu hidden).
There are many threads on this forum with the tips that help for diet as well, for hypothyroids.
Blessings,

ok this sounds great! Thanks so very much for replying. How do I make my menu unhidden? Where can I get the oil from? Any side effects or anything.......I don't have to go to doctors to see what he says or thinks about this right? It wont have any affects on my thyroid? So sorry for so many questions, new at this.....Thaks hun, Pattie0

Hi Pattie,
Yes! You will feel more energy! Coconut oil is very good for your thyroid. Google Virgin Coconut Oil & hypothyroidism... you will find a lot online.
To change Diary - Go to Settings (at the top of the web page) choose Diary Settings. Scroll down & choose friends or public. Depending on who you'd like seeing your food-diary.
I buy my C.O. at a health food store. Apparently it is available at Costco, maybe Walmart too. Or you can order it online. Make sure it is Virgin Coconut Oil. It surprisingly is solid, and looks kinda like lard! But its very good for you & delicious.
There are several threads on this forum about Coconut oil, if you search for them, you may find them.

I'd add the coconut oil and increase your calories accordingly. I didn't use coconut oil to lose weight, but I found that if I ate less than 1325 calories, I'd go into a plateau that wouldn't end until I increased calories. We're all different. I'm about 5'4" and started at 175lbs and am now at 130 lbs. I lost an average of 3 lbs per month.0

Thanks Debby! I just bought organic extra virgin coconut oil, is this ok? It says to take 1 or more tablespoons daily, how should I take it? Thanks again hun. :flowerforyou:0

I mix it with my oats or oatbran & nuts, add coconut milk... or use like butter on hot food...
The coconut oil site says to eat 1 TBS for every 50 lbs. of wt. I ate the amount for my goal wt. :-)
You may need to start out slowly, because its very rich. I wasn't used to eating any fat at all in my diet, so it took me a few days to get used to it. It also can make your stools loose, so be careful of that... best start out with smaller amount.
PS. Keep on shelf in cool place, not fridge.0 -
I can't believe someone hasn't said this, but I would watch your sodium before adding a fatty oil to your diet. Even though there ARE many benefits of coconut oil, it does bring possible poor side effects (raised LDL cholesterol, increased fat/calories that can affect a low calorie diet, etc.).
YOU should track your sodium and try and stay under 2000mg a day--I looked at your diary and you eat low calorie, but low nutritional value foods HIGH in sodium.
For instance, you ate out everyday for the last three days. That's fine, and it happens, but on those days and other days, you eat very processed foods (lunch meat, soups, etc.). These things can be fine, but there is SO much sodium it's very possibly lots of your issues are water retention (especially because, lucky us, water retention goes hand in hand with thyroid issues). Try cutting your sodium way lower, up your water to at least 8 cups of water, and see if your weight OR measurements budge within the next few weeks. Really focus on eating clean--your food choices are not doing your weight, or hormones, any favors.
FYI: Carbs are more important than calories when you have hypothyroidism. My endo told me to shoot for 180mg of carbs or lower for optimum weight loss with thyroid issues.
Plus, you said you can't seem to lose, but you haven't tried strength training. I'd recommend lifting, using weights or your own body--that will not only help stabilize hormones, but build muscle which will eat the calories your thyroid's having a hard time helping you out with0 -
Thanks so much greatly appreciate the info.0

Hi Nan,
Are you taking it in liquid or the capsules. I use it on my skin and I love it. I tried it just as any oil and it made me sick to my stomach. Please let me know how it goes for you. I know it works for Debbylee but I just can't handle the taste. As we all know we're all different.

I bought the one from trader joe's and i'm cooking with it instead of olive oil. I also added coconut milk as a creamer for my coffee. We'll see how October goes....0 -
Wow, never heard about coconut oil before. Going to see endo in few weeks, will talk to her & see her views on it. I sure do learn a lot on this site. Thanks for all the info.0

Thanks all....I didn't start the oil yet, this week watching my sodium to see if anything changes before I start the coconut oil. Great info!0

Make sure you up your water, too! (And weight yourself in the morning BEFORE drinking )0 -
hey you;) well I have tried to lose these last 5 pounds for the last two years and my experience taught me that if your weight loss is stalling you are eating too many calories and/or moving too little. Starvation mode is actually a bit of a myth because your metabolism can only slow down a bit (I am not a professional, but a med student). Try to incorporate weight training to your workouts (increases amount of calories your body burns) and stick to your diet. Eventually, the scale (or at least your measurements and bf %) will move!0

3.5 speed is not a very high speed to make you sweat and get your heart rate going (as long as your talking about KPH)
Id up your speed to at least 5, so your doing a brisk pace and vary the speed up and down if you feel too tired.
If thats not what your talking about my apologies.
I tried for quite a few months putting coconut oil on my morning breakfast and i have to say i dont think it made any difference but everyones different so its worth a try.0 -

Not true for some of us I am afraid.
I have been "stable" on 112 Levo for a couple of years. My TSH was 52 when I was first diagnosed in May of 2010.
Goal is to eat a net 1200 calories a day and averaging much less (other than a cheat day once a month MAYBE), running 30K and biking 30K a week. Eating low carb (gave up grains, etc in Feb) and working towards full paleo eating.
I can lose weight but very slowly, 4 lbs over the past 6 months.
I am 30 lbs from my goal weight (125 and 5'4"). Biggest thing for me was saying goodbye to grains...13 lbs in a few short months when I made the switch.
If you honestly think your advice works I am here to prove it does not.
((Not meant to be rude as everyone knows what works best for them. I just find the above (eat less/move more) insulting to those of us who are working so hard every day to reach our goals))0 -

Glad you said this. This person may have anecdotally been eating more calories than they thought, hence their failed weight loss, but that doesn't hold true for everyone else. Like you said with paleo, and my endocrinologist (who, truth be told, some of you may have even heard of, that's how well known he is) recommends, CARBS are more important than calories with thyroid issues. This person also recommends weight lifting... but you can't possibly hope to gain lean muscle on a big deficit, so the "eating too many calories" doesn't really hold true, either.
Plus, the whole "starvation mode is a myth"... you can damage your metabolism, but it is over a long period of time, etc., etc... that doesn't mean advocated super low deficit calorie diets over a long period of time. To the person who posted the initial comment... I question your medical schooling (or at least, will be sure not to go where you practice).
EDIT: Ah, 20 year old med school student? Sure you're not a second year "pre-med" student? Might want to brush up on the A & P!0
