Wondering if anyone in the group is eating a full on Paleo diet or anything very similar? Gluten free even?
I'm working to see if anything in my diet is interferring with the way I absorb and convert Synthroid. So I started a Whole30 on September 22 and may continue sticking close to those guidelines for a good long time. We'll see what happens at the end of the 30 days. Just wonder if anyone has had success keeping hypo symptoms at bay by eating that way.

My aunt went gluten free for a year and it didn't help.
Personally, since I have so many issues getting backed up, I have a hard time giving up whole grains since that's where most of my fiber comes from. I don't eat many refined grains though. I think I only eat refined grains when I eat out. It helps that my food is digesting slower. I think when I eat too many refined grains and sugary food, I do have a lot more highs and lows. If there's some fiber mixed in though, I do ok.0 -
I shoot for 35 grams of fiber a day and thought I was going to miss that when I started the Whole30 since beans are not included in the plan. Surprisingly tho, I'm still averaging between 35 and 45 a day. I probably wasn't eating as many grains as I thought I was.0

Hi Cynthia,
I've been eating gluten free for about 3 years, and have only recently been diagnosed with hypo. So I can't say that that kind of diet helped! Did you have any success with your Whole30 diet?0 -
Hello, I'm one of those borderline hypos that benefits from the natural throid pills. About a month ago I decided to try Paleo. Not because I really buy into the caveman part but because it reflected what I was eating when I feel my best. Just defined a little better. I'm not 100% strict. And I don't work at eating a bunch of extra fat just because I don't care for it. I strive to eat a lot of veggies, good big of lean meat, some fruit, and a few nuts. No sugar, bread, pasta, potatoes. Know what? I feel so much better. I almost have a flat stomach!! I do work out and have for many years but eating this way has allowed me to get a good deal leaner. I feel really good! Not hungry, which is what plagues me when I do low cal.
And I started it just as an experiment . It's worth trying for a month if you don't have any health reasons not to! The hardest part is avoding bread/pasta/potatoes, for example, at a work meeting they provide pizza only for lunch. Just gotta do your best and keep trucking...0 -
I'm only on Day 13 of the Whole30, but so far it's going really well. Much easier than I anticipated. I didn't have to give up too much to take the plunge, only a handful of food items, but I did have to go cold turkey on snacking. And I think it's working out for me. Plus, despite the added fat from the daily avocados and olives, I'm taking in about 350-400 cals less per day. I'm hoping this might be my "magic number." Prior to losing my gland, I was averaging about 2300 a day and lost and kept off over 120 pounds. But that all just came to a screeching halt (along with the arrival of menopause). I'm hoping this change is something that will make a difference and something that I can continue with if need be.
But at the end of the 30 days I am swapping the olives out for my daily ounce of dark chocolate!!

Full Primal is my goal but I still fall off the wagon more often than I would like.
Going grain free has helped me FINALLY take off some lbs...17 lbs since end of Feb.
I know I feel better, lose weight, lose less hair (big one for me!), and sleep a lot better when I eat this way.0 -

I'm not entirely certain I could go all the way Paleo. I love craft beer WAY too much. I can see myself going grain free tho. I can't say I feel any better on Whole30, because I wasn't eating poorly before. It was really easy to give up pretzels and toast tho. I've got two weeks left and will be getting another thyroid panel done around then too so I'm anxious for time to hurry up and fly by!0 -
Paleo/Primal for 10 months and going strong! I've lost 40 lbs, most of which I lost in the first 12 weeks. I'm currently doing a Paleo Autoimmune Protocol that eliminates even more foods than the standard Whole30 in order to pinpoint problematic foods for joint pain. I have a feeling nightshades are the culprits. I have done Whole30 a few times in the past, but this AI Protocol is the strictest yet. Feel free to friend me and peek at my diary.
My medication has been reduced twice, no longer have the constant joint pain in my ankles and hips, sleep better, have no more indigestion, gas, bloating or constipation and am more focused, plus the weight I've lost. So yeah, it's definitely helped me.0 -

You're quite brave for doing the AI Protocol They'd have to check me into rehab for that one! Did you find that the joint pain and a wonky thyroid came together or did you have one before the other? I'm asking because my main reason for choosing Whole30 was to see if any foods might be interferring with my meds and causing what I think is chronic inflammation. All of which magically appeared after my thyroidectomy. Before then I had quick recoveries, not much problem holding yoga poses and could lift much more weight. Of course the fact that I've put on 20 pounds since the surgery hasn't helped my body feel any better either. Whole30 has helped me finally turn things around.0 -

I didn't have joint pain until my late 20s. I'm 33 years old now. I was diagnosed at age 19. So the joint pain definitely came after diagnosis.
The biggest trigger for me, that I know right now, are grains and sugar. When I stray with grains, I pay for it for up to a week each time. Swollen, painful ankles and fingers, and lots of popping in all my joints. I suspect I'm also sensitive to nightshades which is why I'm doing the AI protocol but I want to pinpoint all possible triggers including eggs, nuts, and seeds. I've done a few Whole30s and have really worked up the nerve/support/determination to do the AI protocol. It's working for me. I feel fantastic and all my joint pain is now completely gone. The last time I cheated was a day before I started my protocol and up until Sunday morning, I had joint pain in my fingers upon waking. When I cheat with sugar, I break out in acne. I don't do dairy anymore as I rather like not wheezing and seasonal allergies.
Gluten sensitivity, leaky gut and autoimmune conditions have strong connections. There are dozens, maybe even hundreds, of books and studies written upon the idea that grains should be avoided by people with autoimmune diseases. I wanted more than anything to feel better, so I decided to take the Paleo plunge head first and now I don't ever want to turn back.0
