Hi,

I am very new to using a carb restricted diet to control my sugar levels. Does anyone have website suggestions to find sample meal plans and recipies to help me? I am getting bored and need new ideas!

Thanks

Hi Carl, You say that you are relatively new to trying to get your blood sugars under control. If you have not yet been referred to a Diabetes educator or a Diabetes Training course I suggest that you follow this up as soon as you can. Most people who have undergone such training have found it to be extremely informative both in terms of blood sugar management and in understanding Diabetes, the possible complications and the importance of taking ownership. In terms of diet the suggestion to look at Dlife is a good one. There are lots of receipes out there. Most people however, with slight modification, eat normal healthy food. MFP is ideal in that it allows you to track the nutritional content of a vast variety of foods. You can also use the receipe facility on MFP to calculate the nutritional content of your favourite receipes. Making healthy choices is the key to successful management. There are lots of products which claim to be suitable for diabetics. The truth is that these are entirely unecessary and really expensive. A good early lesson to learn is that as diabetics we are all individuals. What works for one person may not work for you. It really is a case of trial and error to find out what suits you. The consensus view is that a reasonable target is to try and achieve 45 gms of net carbs per meal with about 20-30 for snacks. Don't be concerned if you aren't achieveing this, just start from where you are and work your way towards the target. Take your time to read around the various boards on this and similar support groups and get a feel for the site. When you're ready to ask questions you will find the people in this group b oth knowlegdable and extremely supportive. I wish you well for the future and will certainly help in any way I can.

Oddly, most diabetes recipe blogs are way too high-carb for me ( many Weight Watchers recipes are also too high in carbs for me), but I've found a lot of delicious diabetes friendly recipes just by searching for Atkins, South Beach and low-carb diet blogs. Here are two of my favorites
    http://www.kalynskitchen.com/
    http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/

I've also found some really tasty stuff here - not necessarily low-carb, but often easily adaptable

Yup, most diabetes recipes are too high carb for me too. Just google low carb recipes and you will find tons. That is one great thing about diet fads, there has been a lot of recipes lately for the carb conscious.

We do have a low carb group or two on MFP. Also, search for muffin in a minute. These things are high fiber, high protein and low carb. I sometimes make them, slice them and pour sf syrup on them as a pancake substitute.
