My first full marathon is this Saturday- (I've done 7 halfs).

Background info...I've had a slight discomfort in my lower right leg on/off starting about two months back. To keep it from aggravating I substituted some road work for 'running' on the elliptical 1-2 times per week. About a month back when it was a little worse I sort of cut out the weekly speedwork because that aggravated it more. Following my training plan I had my last 20 miler on 9/23 (I had done 20 twice earlier in the program). Tapering since then.

ISSUE: Since the last long run my other runs have been crap! I'm still doing one a week on the elliptical. The first couple I just chalked it up to not being recovered from the long run. But that run didn't really seem any harder than the previous times and I felt pretty good after each of those. Basically ever since then my heart rate is about 10 bpm higher! I noticed it on the runs and then even checked my resting HR. Most of the summer resting was about 50 bpm and now running about low 60s.

QUESTION: Any idea what could be up? I thought maybe I'm just having worse recovery because I hadn't done speed work in a couple of weeks. I'm only worried about going into the Full with this issue and how that might carry out on the long effort. I have pushed myself for speed on some halfs so I know I can maintain low mid 160 hr for about two hours. but that is a difficult effort and certainly not a level I feel I could maintain for another 13 miles!

I also wondered if it's a sign of not hydrating well enough (can't that raise your HR?). Not that I've been any worse that I have been all along but I'm pushing to really keep the water up this week. Now I know the first thing people are going to say is "Throw the monitor/watch out and just run how you feel" - I'm not sure on a full if running how I 'feel' good is going to be a level I can maintain the 26 miles- worried I will start out too fast. I don't overdo the #s- just like to watch HR & pace every so often to #1 make sure I'm not doing too much too early and toward the end to know how much I can really push myself without doing damage.

Looking for any ideas of what could be causing this- any suggestions on how to fix it OR just work with it?
Part of me thinks if my resting HR is higher then I just move my levels up 10 beats. If I like to run 155 hr level then 165 now should be ok for the long haul. BUT I also ran a half once where I went out too fast and my HR stayed near 165 the entire time and I was really dragged out by about mile 10-11. Now I know why they say it's 90% mental...because the fear of the unknown is really reeking havoc on me!

Thanks so much for any input!

An elevated resting heart rate can be one of the signs of over training. Not saying that what's going on with you but whenever I've had wonky stuff going on with my heart rate, and I'm very in tuned to it at this point, it usually means I need a break.

Since you've got your marathon in just a few days there's nothing you can do to improve your fitness in any meaningful way from now until then. I don't know what your taper has looked like and it doesn't really even matter. I'd just rest and any running or cross training should be kept on the nice and easy side of the equation.

The other thing I'd recommend is - RELAX. I know it can be hard this being your first marathon but getting freaked out and stressing isn't going to serve you. I'm not going to tell you to throw out the watch because I certainly wouldn't throw out mine but I also don't let it dictate my performance. Your idea of elevating your effort to 10 beats higher because your resting is 10 beats higher at the moment sounds to me like laying a great foundation for blowing up big time about 2/3 into your race.

So my advice? Rest. Relax. Run.

Does anyone know how to delete threads you started? Seeing as how this point is mute now- I'd like to clear the board for other topics...can't seem to find a 'delete'....thanks

You just stop posting on it and it slips into the ether.
