Pull buoys - yes or no?

I have read mixed opinions on the use of these. I used to use them when I was a competitive swimmer (25 years ago lol) I am trying to get back into swimming for a half ironman swim in 3 months time (eeek) and yesterday used one for about 500m of a 2.5km session. Today my shoulders are pleasantly sore - not injury sore, just the "yes they did some work" sore.

What are others opinions or usage of pull buoys?

I think they're great to use for a particular set after having warmed up properly, but I wouldn't use any equipment for an extended period if time during the workout to help avoid overuse injuries. Good luck on your half ironman training!

    Exactly what fitmama2013 said.....

Like you, I used to swim competively - but those days were almost 30 years ago. Then I used them for strength training. Certainly I would use them for your ironman training. I do think though on a regular basis - if you are doing other strength trainign outside of the pool - really not necessary for a woman at least. The resistance of the water is enough to tone.

Good luck on the half ironman! Make sure you keep us posted!
