It was a Paleo Dinner Nightmare........

And, it WASN'T A dream either! I suppose I'm just looking for a little sympathy 'cause I still can't believe it happened....
Saturday night, hubby and I were invited to a friend's house for drinks and dinner. I can make good choices I thought, no worries, they know how I eat, etc.....
Well, THIS was the menu:
Drinks: Fresh Peach Daiquiris (fresh peaches, white sugar, peach schnapps and rum, glasses rimmed in sugar)
Appetizer: Fresh Fruit Platter and apple cinnamon bread
Dinner: Spinach Salad with Strawberries, Whole Wheat Pasta with both Pesto and Bolognese sauces (they were good), garlic french bread, And a tomato cobbler. (just like a fruit cobbler but savory)
Dessert: Homemade apple pies, vanilla ice cream and coffee.
I literally did not know what to say or do, (these are important co-workers of hubby) and I was hungry.....so I drank the drinks, sampled the foods and of course I feel like crap....bloated...and sort of disgusted with the whole situation. I never eat fruit because of the sugars. And of course white sugar, breads and pastas ended long ago for me.
Have any of you guys faced this? Will just going back to my regular Paleo foods bring things back for me and how fast!
And, YES I learned a valuable lesson about eating before you go to a dinner party....I hate being rude, but next time, I'll just have to come up with an alternative...
Thanks for reading, I appreciate it.
ETA: I can't spell!

Wow - that's tough!! I would have done the exact same thing that you did. I am only about 2 months into the whole Paleo/Primal thing and avoided social eating during Whole 30 because I didn't trust myself. I did go out for drinks one night after Whole 30 and had some off plan snacks that night. I felt awful for about 1 day, MEH for a second day and was then back to normal!! Hopefully you'll bounce back quickly!
I'm sure there are tricks to mastering the dinner party - veggie plate, meat, fruit (if you eat it) - but yours sounded virtually impossible - :0)
Edited for typo0 -
Don't beat yourself up. It was one meal, on one night. You might feel bad from eating gluten-y and sugary stuff, but your gut will heal and you'll be back to normal.
Just forget it and move on. Maybe drink some bone broth to help your tummy.0 -
thanks ladies, I will take all your advice and appreciate it!0

Oh man....how horrible to be torn in two directions. I would say one night likely isn't going to 'harm' you unless you're true celiac where there is known damage done. But you may be bloated for a day or two. I usually am.
I would likely say that in the event of further invites to dinner parties, mention that you are not able to have wheat in your diet, so if possible could there be one dish that is wheat free. Its not an unacceptable request considering that if you were physically allergic to peanuts for example, you wouldn't be out of place to mention it. Then at least you know that there will be something you can nibble on. Make sure to say you don't need it to be a wheat free environment so its not making a big deal out of it, but at least you know something may be friendly!0 -
Thank you ChaoticMum. I had thought of that, but just didn't know how to "say" it..I like what you said thank you!
Yes, "not able" is way better than going into a long winded rant/lecture on the evils of wheat for sure....
Yes, next time I will be better able to communicate as well.

I also would've done the same thing most likely. I agree with the others, don't beat yourself up, it was only one meal and it's not like you gorged. I will take a lesson from you and always eat before a dinner party.0

I will do the same. Good Advice.]0 -
Exactly....it's just easier to say not able, and if they ask why you can say that you have found extreme bowel issues with the grain. That should stop any more questions! Lmbo
I think that the farther away that we get from eating grains such as wheat, the less we remember how entrenched into daily diets it is in the mainstream. That sounds like an awesome special dinner out for me and my hubby.....pre-primal.0 -
I would make a dish to bring, enought to share that way you can still eat..0

It can be tough...
I will sample things when I am in a situation like that...I would have grabbed a few chunks of fruit, a bunch of the salad - a very small helping of the pasta and tomato cobbler...
if asked I would simply say unfortunately too much gluten does not agree with my system and I don't want to overtax it.0
