First 5k tomorrow

Hubby and I are participating in the Susan G Komen Race for a Cure 5k tomorrow. When we registered, we thought we would be around week 7 of C25k. In reality, we are at W4D1. A wrenched muscle, bad allergy attacks, pitiful weather side put us way behind our intended schedule. I am not worried. We'll get it done. There just might be more walking than we had hoped when we siogned up last month. We did an awesome job fundraising. Almost $1000 between the two of us.

Once the race is done, I am contemplating putting the program on hold until Spring. Fall has come to New England. It is dark and fairly cool by the time we are both home from work and ready to go for a run. Cool will soon become cold. I depsise the cold. (Why am I still in New Endlgand when the house next door to my best friend in Central Florida and one hour from the Happiest Place on Earth is on the market and is being reduced all the time?) I am also not a big fan of being out in the dark. We can get a weekend run in during the day. I can work one treadmill run a week into my gym schedule (I have classes I attend which I love and am not will to give up to run - which I do not love.) Hubby could probably get a daytime run in on his weekday off when I am at work. This could work well enough until the snow comes. Of course we are hoping for a winter like last year - essentially no snow. This is New England and snow is more likely than not.

We started this because we want to fo a runDisney event. The Tower of Terror 10 miler works best with our schedule. We figured a year of training would make 10 miles in about 2 hours a fairly comfortable pace. I am not sure how well we could do if we back off on training until March/April when there is daylight once again and it is beginning to warm up.

Please excuse the rambling whine. I guess I am thinking this out in print.

Wow, $1000 is a serious job well done!! That is fantastic!! Good luck on your 5k tomorrow, I'm sure it's going to feel great!

Your 10 mile goal next year sounds doable if you stick to your training throughout the winter. I don't see a good reason to stop running just because it's dark or cold, with the right equipment (even if you're inside on a treadmill) you can keep your momentum going. When you're new to the sport, coming back to running and looking at a goal distance of ten miles is not going to sound very fun after almost half a year hiatus.

I'm in New England too, and I just started running in May. We can survive the winter together and not lose inertia :)

Edit: We're supposed to have a snowier-than-average winter. Maybe look into YakTrax? I might pick up a pair

Great luck to you! Congrats on your hefty fundraising! You are doing great things. A new lifestyle means new experiences. I'm sure you'll amaze yourselves.

My first 5k is tomorrow as well. I just completed C25k last week, but I am still slow and struggling. My husband is at the end of week 5. Since the 5k is to benefit my kids' school, the kids will also be tagging along (ages 5 and 8). This will not be a "push yourself" type of experience for us. We just want to have fun and experience our first "race."

I keep hearing about Disney runs. The 10 miler sounds great. How do you find out about them? Would love to do one.

We go to Disney at least once a year. We heard about them on different Disney boards we watch. Check out www.rundisney.com for the full line up and the special events associated with each race. Most of them also have family runs of 5k and 1 mile so you could include your kids.
