Starting my Metformin today for the first time...

Well after being diagnosed with PCOS, I was never informed that there are some meds out there that could help with the issues that come along with it...so after talking with some girlfriends they told me that the DR will sometimes prescribe Metformin, I then did a little research i see that it can help regulate my periods, which down the road will help when me and my husband TTC...also as well maybe help with some weight loss, The nurse also told me that the medication can make me fertile which I am ok with. I just don't know what to expect with all of this. I am nervous and excited at the same time. What is your experiences and stories about being on Metformin??

I have taken Metformin off and on for about 2 1/2 years. Mostly on while I was going through fertility treatment, once I finally got pregnant there was some discussion about if I should stay on or go off. My OB/GYN and I decided it was best for me to stay on, however, I ended up going into preterm labor at 24 weeks and ended up in the hospital. My perinatologist team decided to take me off. After I had my daughter (at 27 weeks) I stayed off of it for about 4 1/2 months and just started retaking it about two or three weeks ago.

I have found that it did help regulate my cycle, and I believe it did play a hand in me getting pregnant. When you first start Met you can expect some GI problems, and diarrhea, atleast that was my experience. I recommend starting at a lower dose and working your way up to whatever dose you and your doctor decide. I am going to eventually be back on 2,000mg/day. I have found that I tolerate the extended release MUCH better than the regular.
