Oklahoma members with recent GBS, help please!

Ok, I am being told my United Healthcare insurance won't cover bariatric surgery regardless of need or diagnosis though I am seeing others getting it approved albeit in other states. I am trying to find coverage even if I have to pay out of pocket for it. Could you share with me who your insurance is and what type of plan you have. ANY info would be appreciated!

I'm in tulsa, I have Blue cross blue shield, but not all policies are created equal, I've had 3 different companies with BCBS insurance and the first two did not cover it at all and had gross deductibles. my current policy has a specialist Dr. copay of $35 each visit, fitness trainer is out of pocket at $50/visit, nutritionist was copay of $35/visit, psych eval was fully covered, 1 time sleep apnea study was copay $75, surgery was fully covered, hospital stay copay of $100 per day for a total of $300. My program also has a maximum out of pocket cost if you have crap insurance or none so you might shop around programs to see if any of them are willing to work with you if your insurance company won't.

United covered mine in Arizona with no medical dx (other than morbid obesity). I highly recommend going to a Bariatric surgeon for a consult and have their office insurance specialists make the calls. Its what they do and they know exactly what lingo to use to get the insurance companies to cover it (unless your policy really doesn't cover it). Good luck!!

United covered mine. I live in Texas. They required a documented 5 year weight history and a 6 month supervised diet...but they covered it.
  • Thanks for the responses! The Bariatric surgeon my PCP is going to refer me to just changed hospitals and won't start taking patients till he starts in December so that is my first step. If anyone else has info I'm all ears. Thanks everyone!
